Thin, average or wide plank hardwood?
My husband and I are renovating a 1955 ranch home. in-home is a fire place that I will post. you will see that the fireplace has very narrow long bricks in its façade. I was interested in finding out what you thought would go nicely with this: wide plank (4-5") Thin plank (2") or a medium plank (3,5") hardwood floor.( And why) We have an open floor plan where the new kichen is open to th LRm. Where the fire Place is. So I will post a few of those too.

Emily Hurley I really like wide planks. (Of course, that's not what I have in my home.) :)

Rebecca Zuurhoud What is the width of the room

Katherine Loizos Rebecca, The room is 16' wide x 27' long. Lots of light on the long side because there are 5 - 7' panels of glass. Emily I would choose the wide plank too, but I fear it might clash with the narrow brick. I hoped someone mIght offer insight to that. Maybe it would be a great contrast?

Rebecca Zuurhoud Your room is quite wide so I would suggest not going with a narrow board- 2 1/4- it will be a very busy look & it does tend to give a dated look. If you are going with a solid product 3 1/2 would be as wide as I would suggest. A wide plank would suit the size of the room as well, but I would suggest an engineered product only-it's more stable. You may want to have a look @ strand / verticle bamboo. This look should pull together the narrow brick with your med. or wide plank floor.

Eutree Wide Plank Flooring Katherine, even a 5" would look good. Here is a 5" wide Quarter Sawn White Oak floor for a client in Charleston. If you have any questions please email me directly. We help folks plan their floor, then make it for them. joel@eutree.com

olldbobbi Eutree - Ha! The point is I like YOUR style!!!! There are so many benefits to wide planks, and I especially love the look with, oh I don't know what it's called, sort of fake nails? The big wood circles at the ends of the planks. The thinner boards are so 1965 (the year my house was built!). I hope that made sense, it's still o'dark early in California.

Eutree Wide Plank Flooring :-) yes the "face nailing" of planks is very old school. Ive seen both real and fake ones applied to modern floors. Whats really neat is the Brass face nails! Thank you.

lefty47 HI --The time period of your house they used about a 3 inch hardwood for flooring , But today I would go with the wide board , it's just a nicer look and will stand the test of time and it shows off the wood grain . it will be less busy and probably more easy care than they had in the 50's . I would love to see the fireplace ,- I love mid-century modern looking fireplaces .

Fairpoint Construction & Development Wide planks look really nice, however, in old ranch style homes 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" wide planks were traditionally used. If you can replace all the flooring, you should be able to update to a wider plank.
