Need help figuring out where to install lights in great room
Hello Wonderful Houzz community!
We are in the process of remodeling the back of our house- we have a longish room with a vaulted ceiling. 15 feet wide, 40 feet long. This will be our living room, dining area and kitchen (with island). We need to pick where to install lights (and what sorts of lights). I have no idea where to start. I'm not sure where the dining table will end up, so should I not install a light in that area? Or just put in a few recessed lights? We will do recessed lights and under cabinet lights in kitchen, as well as a skylight over the island- do I still need pendants over the island? And in the living room part, can I get away with just two LEDs recessed and pointed at the very front of the room (bookshelves there) or should I also get wall sconces or more recessed lights??? Thanks!

Affordable Quality Lighting Hi there,

Can you post a picture of the Space? Also, do you have a particular style you are designing for? And a rough lighting budget?

Sounds challenging and I'd love to lend a hand.

rfsydney I also need help. Had a design consultant come out, and he said we could put "4 lights over there, 2 lights over here...blah blah blah" and then left. He did't say where to position them in the ceiling, nor did he even draw a plan, or seem knowledgeable about LEDs. I was very disappointed. We need recessed lighting for a long room, with ceilings that are 8 ft high. The liv room (25 feet long x about 10 feet wide) feeds into the dining room (which currently as a fixture I don't like), and then a L shape to a very large foyer, guesstimate as of this writing 15 x 12ish). I want a more diffuse light, so that it doesn't seem like "spot" lighting. We are installing new fireplace surround with beautiful stone, but with no light it is hardly visible...thinking eyeball recessed over fireplace. Home Depot has lots of fixtures and we are considering "Halo" brand. Does anyone know anything about that brand? Need advice on placement, diffuse LED...any all advice welcome. Thinking maybe I should skip recessed lighting in dining room and get new fixture. After this project...have to figure out kitchen. I have attached a photos of lv room/dining room and foyer.; thanks RF Syd
