Help with new venetian gold benchtop.
I am creating a kitchen from secondhand finds. Will a new venetian gold granite bench top go with jarah timber cupboards? I have carrara marble splashbacks. or I have enough granite 30cm high. It is a small galley kitchen for a terrace. I could buy cream tiles for the splashback, instead. thanks for any advice.

Lynette C The terrace is divided into 2 flats. The kitchen is upstairs. I have included a plan of the kitchen, photo of jarrah cupboards from the kitchen they came from including splash backs and photo of the granite. I am keeping the marble benches for the kitchen downstairs. Also photo of the kitchen as it is now, pumpkin walls. It is a rental. Hope this helps. Also there is no laundry, so I have to put a washing machine/ dryer under the bench. I have a 600 Ilve gas upright stove to go in, similar look to the stove in jarrah kitchen. Thanks

Lynette C The new venetian gold granite has pink tones in it and the jarrah has brownish , red tones. Jarrah is an australian hardwood, from western Australia. I think they will go together. I read on one of the posts, not to mix marble and granite together. So maybe the carrara marble splash back is not the answer.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm thinking tallow wood for the floor, as using it on the deck that leads out of the kitchen, in thin boards, or black and off white tessalated tiles victorian style or small square dark terracotta tiles.

TanCalGal I'd do the back splash in the granite, too. Wood floor will be nice, but do you worry about a wood floor in a kitchen that has a washing machine? I think I have seen marble and granite used together, as long as the colors blend.

Lynette C Thanks for considering my enquiry.

Good point about the floor for a washing machine. I need to tile floor and slope it to a drain outside. Not sure if the miele has a protection for flooding water. I will check that out. Or I use a waterproof underlay, as tallow wood is a hardwood.

I thought I will put up the cupboards and if the timber looks too dark, I will paint them cream. For a rental, I thought the timber might wear better. But I still want a beautiful kitchen for all my efforts. Thanks for the confirmation about using the splasback.
I don't think the tiles on the floor (in the photo) that are there now would look ok.
My son wants slate on the floor. Ideas please. Thankyou.

I will look for some tiles and add images.

TanCalGal Some sell trays for under washing machine. I have seen them used especially when washing machine is upstairs No 2

I think unpainted wood is easier to care for, unless it seems too dark. Venetian gold granite is often paired with wood floors. The slate sounds interesting, though, and might be beautiful. We have a full time rental at the beach as a "second home". She has dark gray square slate tiles on bathroom and kitchen floor and kitchen counters, too. I love the slate, very easy to care for. This photo seems to combine wood & slate. Kitchen

Lynette C Thankyou for your ideas and photos. I am still looking at floors. mosaic gives a more traditional victorian look. The slate I was thinking of was chinese green slate. It maybe too cool, compared to the warmer slate in the above kitchen. Being such a skinny kitchen would a smaller tile look better? Would slate date my kitchen to be an old fashioned late 80's? The cupboards wouldn't be any darker than the above kitchen, so at this stage I'm staying with the natural timber. Thanks for your help j222b.

TanCalGal The larger tiles are popular today: 12x12 or 18x18. I do not like them for small rooms. I'd rather have the smaller tiles. I have white & black tile like your red and black tile photo in a small bathroom and love it. Here is an article on 12x24 tiles, & I think that could work in a small room.

Not sure how the Chinese green tile would look. It might be fine.

Lynette C Hi. Thanks for the quick reply j222b! I'm challenged by the larger tiles and will have to sit on it for a while. I like the idea of less grout. I like the the use of small and large in one room. However I'm tending to go with square and diamond. for the floor. I have the victorian terracotta in my bathroom, so I'll organise the hubby to get a piece of the granite and the cupboard door and take a photo in our bathroom.

In the terrace ,the kitchen and bathroom are next to each other with a common hallway. At the moment the hallway, and both rooms have the same orange tiles. I think the black and white or terracotta will look good in both rooms. The expense of changing the floors may be worth it, for the overall improvement. We have purchased the cupboards and benches for under $1000.00 (which includes the carrara marble for benchtops downstairs.

I am very interested in your thoughts about the terracotta or white with the jarrah cupboards and venetian gold granite.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to take a few days to ponder on all the information you have given me. Probably have photos next Tuesday.
thanks again!
