New bedroom was two rooms: what to do with such a long space-Help!
My bedroom was two rooms before the previous owner took the wall down to make one huge room. Trouble is, it is now a long bowling alley of a room. What to do with the windows? Should I put up some kind of half divider--columns etc? Maybe bookcases and a window seat at the end? Please ignore the boxes and stuff and tell me what you would do here..Thanks!!!!

michigammemom You are indeed fortunate to have this spacious master suite. Take advantage of this large open space and create a relaxing retreat in front of the fireplace with a loveseat, and large ottoman. You could even fit a secretary desk in the corner by the fireplace. Your gorgeous room could also use some crown molding.

decoenthusiaste Look at hotel suites for ideas. You can have a bar, library, lounge area - even room for a massage table!

olldbobbi I would flip the bed to the opposite wall so I could see the fireplace in bed - how romantic! Have a white cabinet built to house the tv and hang it over the fireplace.

If you need storage, build closets on the walls on either side of the radiator. Create a small sitting/dressing area in front of, but not blocking, the radiator.

If you like to read, or have a collection you would like to display, there's plenty of room here for tall bookcases.

bprince300 Looks like a radiator at the end window so a seat is prob out of the question, but they used to build heat resistant 'boxes' around those that served as a shelf or very sill. Some built-in shelves on both sides at a 5' height or so would make that end look very much like a personal library if thats your relaxation. A couple of Very comfy chairs by the fireplace with a table or ottoman is all that end would need. It would leave space for a beautiful tall armoire across from the bed to accomodate the TV, balance the height of the poster bed and help define 'bedrm space' vs. 'sitting rm space' . You could consider extending your rods and using long panels with the valances to effectively 'widen' the narrow window a bit. (like on the French doors) The ceiling fixture is the first thing I see in the pics. It demands attention in an otherwise calm space. maybe extend the ceiling lights or add a fan is needed or just a simpler fixture that is flatter to the ceiling ? The round table with a floor length cloth on it in the window next to the FP would begin to separate the two spaces too. or a small desk area, tall plant, etc.

Sherri Fitzgerald I'm an Interior Decorator and I can see your plight with all the windows and doors in the room. I suggest that you allow your room only one entrance ....by removing the door across from the fireplace giving you more workable space. You will have to measure to see if you could fit your bed across from the fireplace (like in the picture below) . I love the window seat idea!... I can't tell if there would be room for a sitting area in front of the fireplace like in the picture as well.... or... if you could.... I would make the sitting area by the patio doors something like in the other picture below. Just pull the love seat away from the doors or put it on the other side of the table so you will be looking outside when sitting there. Don't forget a nice reading lamp! All the best with your room! By the way... Click on my name above and go to my ideabook "Bedroom Ideas" It has some of the nicest bedroom pictures from Houzz. Lots of ideas for colors and styles. Check it out! I'm sure it will help you a lot!

inkwitch Stunning space needing a lot of work! Flip the bed -- watching flames is guaranteed to put you to sleep! However before you do, draw out the floor plan and plot the traffic patterns from door -closet-bath-etc. THe bedskirt may not be advisable; they're sort of going out of style, and it provides a more open look. Besides, you're less likely to lose your houseshoes.

THe TV needs to have some cabinetry that match the rest of the woodwork -- traditional, white, well-crafted. THe dark TV platform really doesn't add anything to the room even thought your 4-poster is dark wood. IT will help hide the various components and wires, giving a more polished look. The table as a bedside stand is appealing, but a square or oblong table or chest would hide wiring and provide more "weight" to the bedroom area. They don't have to match on both sides of the bed.

The ceiling fixture is great.

THe other end. You would be better able to consider its potential if you remove everything -- EVERYTHING, and bring in only what you absolutely know you want. What comes immediately to mind is an area rug to define the area, a curved loveseat, a really comfortable but stylish chair. THe round table could be used in this space. All the front legs of the furniture should be on the rug. Floor lamp by the chair. THis could be an absolutely wonderful oasis. Trust yourself. Go with what you love.

lizclose WOW, great ideas.
I may just close up that second door across from the fireplace...good idea! That would help to make it more and could then either move the bed or put a love seat area there. MMMmmmm....and yes, the bookcase under the TV is terrible. I had not even thought of that since we had the old IKEA thing and needed something to cover the wires and hold the cable box. If we add shelves and a window seat on the far wall, I will have a place for all my books!!

And why didn't this room have crown molding to begin with? It was built in 1915--someone must have ripped it out. That would cost some $, but might be well worth the money.

Thank you--can't wait tio hear more ideas!

trebinje The previous owner may have made a mistake combining this into a single room. You've got many creative options, per suggestions above, to make the most of an awkward space, but be true to your lifestyle ... are you really going to lounge around in that extra space? If not, you could potentially increase the value of your home by restoring that square footage into another bedroom, nursery, exercise room, office or library, and living with the MBR as it was.

Don't know if that's adequate for your needs, but just another perspective on what to do with someone else's remodeling decision that may not work for your lifestyle. A decision like this needs to keep in mind what the local housing market values ... more bedrooms or a luxurious MBR space.

lizclose Yes, I thought about that. However, I think they turned the hall bathroom into what is now a large 8x8 2nd floor laundry room. NIce but makes turning that room back intoa bedroom impossible since there would be no bathroom accessible. Good idea, though.

granonie anon A huge bedroom - oh what a wonderful problem to have! Especially one with a fireplace and French Doors leading onto a patio. The first thing I would have suggested was to place the bed across and facing the fireplace, and then I saw there would not be enough space in between the two to prevent the chance of the bedclothes catching fire if you use the fireplace. Since it has no hearth, I presume it is electric or gas. When part of the room is done you would have room to play with the bed, scooting it up and down the wall it is on to see which spot would be best. You could place a love seat and a small table and maybe a chair on the end of the room where the doors lead out onto the patio or balcony. Or you could use two chairs with a table in between. I would change out the doors across from each other on the sitting end of the room. There are any number of types of doors you could put in place of them that do not take up nearly as much space. I have small double doors on my master bath which would be only one of several solutions for you. Depending on what areas they lead to, perhaps you could take one or both of them down. You could have a cabinet especially made for the radiator to improve it's looks. I've seen them made with a metal box inside them and a decorative grille on the front. I certainly agree that well made white cabinetry is needed for the TV. A couple of pretty plants just inside the patio, and several on the patio would look good and add life to the room. Many more things you can do here. Good luck! I know you can make this a stunning, as well as beautiful and useful room.

visionaire1 Hi lizclose.

What a beautiful space you have. I wish I had this problem! I too would close up the door opposite the fireplace and use the space for a luxurious retreat with a couch, armchair and ottoman. I also agree with other posters that the room needs to be framed with a crown moulding. I would also change the window treatments to something a bit more elegant, perhaps curtain panels in a bold pattern in a darker shade of your wall color. I would match your bedding accordingly. Dusty blues, whites and beiges, much like the amazing Candice Olson bedrooms posted above. Good luck!

P.S. I LOVE the pendant light above your bed :)

Gina Leitz What a gorgeous room; you are so lucky to have such a large space!
To divide it though you will have to use furniture. I agree with some of the above posters that you should move the bed to the opposite wall that it is on. Have your bed face the windows and place your t.v. on that wall instead. I'd use two chairs with a round table with a lamp in between them facing the window/radiator and a chaise lounge or loveseat against the wall across from the fireplace . Built in bookcases on either side of the window with the radiator would look nice. You could even build it in where you could place your t.v. over there. Make it a retreat to read, watch t.v. and do correspondence. A darker rug in the center could tie it all together. You could add a bench at the end of your bed to sit on for tying shoes etc...It could be one that also holds storage if you should so choose. I have no idea if both of the tables on the side of your bed are the same but if they are use one to go in between the two chairs and the other somewhere else in the house and get two new side tables with storage for next to the bed. I like the curtains and the material gives the room that pop of color it needs. You could get a few floor plants appropriate for inside and place one next to the french doors that lead outside and possibly one next to the window by the fireplace.

Mint Design It appears there is a door opposite the fireplace. If so, would it be possible to seal off that door so you can put the bed opposite the fireplace and a sofa or loveseat at the foot of the bed? It would help to have the floorplan and dimensions so we can be more specific with recommendations. If you would like to separate say a sitting area and a reading or computer area consider using wide archways to do that so you still have a large room but it is visually broken so as to avoid the tunnel or bowling alley effect. There is no need to arch the ceiling as in one of the photos, just the arch(es) or pilasters and a header beam, whichever appeals to you and your budget. I am attaching 3 photos which I hope will inspire you with ideas. Enjoy; you have beautiful potential here! :)

modern11526 I suggest that you make part of the room abit of a sitting area and the other area for your bed.i also suggest you look up the designer Candice Olson

lizclose Awesome idea to create an arch just along the ceiling!! I had thought of trying to create some division, but was thinking I'd have to use columns and short bookcases or something....I have already called a carpenter to ask how much to seal up the door and will ask about an arch and built in's around the window and a radiator cover/window seat....I'l let you all know what he says! Thanks so much!
