Sofa reupholstered?
I inherited this sofa from my grandmother, and I love it, does anyone know where this style originated from, French? or if it is valuable? suggestions needed for fabric type and color would be appreciated.

feeny Hi jconstantin,
I love your antique sofa and definitely think it is worth reupholstering. Camelback sofas were developed as a style in the 18th century in England in America. This particular style of camelback with the claw feet first emerged a little later in the Regency period and was popular throughout the 19th century. They still make versions of this traditional style today, of course, and they were popular in revivals of traditional furniture designs in the 1930's and 40's too.
I love these sofas upholstered in traditional velvets like the one you have, but really you can use many different styles of fabric, either emphasizing its traditional look or updating it. But you should choose your fabric based on the design and color palette of the whole room, not just one piece.

charrell1 Ooooh...great sofa! I've seen one just like it with a leopard type fabric and the wood painted a fun color! The wood trim on the one I saw was pink!

Natalie Lovely! Here's a link to inspire you---it's a hotel in Savannah called The Mansion. Had the pleasure of staying there a few years back-just amazing! Enjoy and have fun with your sofa... http://www.mansiononforsythpark.com/photo_gallery/photo_gallery.asp
