olldbobbi If you don't want built-ins, floating shelves are nice [houzz=Staging Ideas] or [houzz=Living Room]

You could also choose a floating shelf like this...check out Ikea.

Walter Comstock Make a wall of art, put a frame around the tv to blend it in as art. Go to art.com and have a blast, then go to someplace like walmart and purchase black frames to go with your art. If you need mats go on the internet and learn how to diy. Just have fun with the wall.

Paradise Restored Landscaping & Exterior Design Is the lamp to close to TV? Pull it closer to the window or couch instead of using it to balance the display on wall. Have you considered a chair (rocker or swivel even) facing the 2 large leather pieces - a pop of color or subtle pattern that can blend with other accessories? It could be positioned in the corner of the rug and swivel to the fire place or TV or to round out the setting.

Possibly move the TV and picture closer to the window also - centering it might be the reason for your original question - Grab a chair from another room and try it. See how the room feels -

pcmom1 I think the look will improve if the piece of furniture underneath the tv were taller and slightly wider than the tv. I think you have all the items on your current piece, to try and fill up that gap between it and the screen.

If you keep the current piece, take every thing "busy" off the top. Add simple dark books, carved boxes, etc. Make the piece seem wider by adding a full plant, about the same height as your furniture to the right side. Add an ottoman to the other side (Pier One, World Market).

The other suggestion is to paint that one wall, so there isn't so much contrast with the black screen. That will blend it away, and it is better for your eyes to not have to deal with such a color difference. Black against yellow is especially jarring. Check out the photo above by Michigammemon.

Natalie Hello-definitely add some shelves. You have beautiful pieces, lovely architecture, and great fireplace---Unfortunately, none are showcased the way they should be because the wall color is too stimulating. It makes the eye never rest but go from here to there, back and forth, etc. If I may suggest a more muted color, perhaps one from your rug, and painting the walls and ceiling, I am more than certain it will make a HUGE difference. Paint is inexpensive and can really work wonders. I think once you change the color, you'll see this room in a whole different light. Something restful, not soooo stimulating. If you're open to the idea, then please, take a photo of your rug and your fireplace---(I can see your kitchen counter) Upload the pics and I will give you some paint suggestions. Hope this helps...

travel704 I really appreciate all the input. Thanks PCMOM1, I think you're right about all the clutter, that is what I was trying to do. I'll have to think about repainting....The trayed ceiling might make that a difficult task. I am planning on getting a chair just haven't found one yet.

pcmom1 Another option to address the paint contrast, and the scale of the bottom piece of furniture, would be to have a cabinet maker create a piece or furniture for you. One that would have feet to give it the furniture look, have doors on the bottom to hide components, and create a frame around the tv (with a solid back). Stain to match your mantle.
