Does it work?
I know I need to put some wall art above the fireplace and may be some color pillows on the sofa however I wonder if this rug and layout work after all. The initial thread it this http://www.houzz.com/discussions/195801/Completly-asymmetrical-living-with-Fireplace

rivers300 Fireplace and window looks and feels really traditional. Red chair looks and feels really contemporary. Table and sofa looks and feels really mid century. Rug looks and feels eclectic.

Jamieson I like where your going with this, the previous posters gave you some great advice! The only thing I might be tempted to do (emphasize might!) would be to paint your built ins and wall black. I know black isn't for everybody, but I think it would look super chic with your modern pieces and rustic/antique accents. Please only take this as a suggestion, curious what other posters may think. Here are a few examples of black accent walls.

michigammemom I'm trying to get a feel for the overall look you are going for. The abstract rug is a really strong element and the Danish modern coffee table isn't doing it justice. I would look for something edgier in glass to let the rug show through. I also suggest that you edit your accessories; namely the alarm clock and beer steins and gilded art work, to reflect the modern sensibility you have going on this room.
