What color paint over chair rail with fushia?
I am using this wallpaper below a chair rail throughout a hallway and stairwell..I would appreciate any ideas for paint color above chair rail and moldings. Thank you!!

lefty47 Hi -- I suppose you could use a very light lavender that I think I see in the paper or stay with white . Or if you are going bold then match the dark color in the paper. Or really bold you could go black or a black navy.

Stanton Designs-online design services I would go with white. That will compliment the bold pattern you are using. I feel if you were to use any color this wallpaper would not stand out and you would loose what you love about it.

olldbobbi I would say black, or white, depending on what is above the chair rail. If the wall above the chair rail is white, then the chair rail should be a glossy white if you go with white.

kimmy1967 Thank you! The background is really white on this paper and I am afraid if I go white paint, one of them will look dingy

olldbobbi You could try Behr Ultra Premium Plus Ultra White. It's the whitest white I've found, appliance white.

Jen Massullo I think Gray and pink are beautiful together

kimmy1967 I was thinking Gray as well, with a deeper gray on the chair rail and floor mouldings

Natalie Hi-really it depends on how colorful your home is, but I get a sense that you're pretty brave with color having selected this wallpaper. (love it)...
When I first looked at this I thought of a muted chartreuse or watery turquoise for the upper wall. For a touch of whimsy, mirrors of different shapes and sizes (white frames) could be hung throughout the hallway or framed black and white photos of you and your love ones. If you would rather play it "safe" with color, then go 2 shades lighter than the exact pink hue of your wallpaper. Next choice would be a smoky gray---then black--and---white last. Hallways have lots of traffic, white walls won't look so white after awhile... Have Fun!

Chandani What furniture will be place in that area... dark wood, lacquered black/white, mirrow/metal/glasss? What are the floors? This info would be helpful in picking a colour. Having said that, my first thought is a pewter-grey.

kimmy1967 This is going in the foyer and upstairs hallway of an old victorian, so not really surrounded by furniture, but the floors are a walnut hardwood with heavy handrail and spindles on stairs..

apennameandthata You need to tell us the floor colour, and the colours in the rest of the house.
kimmy1967 this paper is center hall, dining room on left is cream and gray blue with punches of red, living room on right is light yellow with large dark blue oriental rug. Style is more Ballard design type..Floors are medium walnut color. I moved into my husbands home. Nothing had been redone since the 80's. no style inside whatsoever. this is the exterior currently being painted...and i vacilate on color of the house too! As you can see, not much TLC was given!

TanCalGal This could be a beautiful home. I'd hold off on this bright wall paper. First decide on a plan for the entire house & outside. Hire a professional to help with colors! Maybe end up using this wallpaper in a powder room.

apennameandthata Yeah, if there is no style inside at all, then you have a blank canvas. You might be the last time you have this opportunity before you die forever. I suggest you start by thinking about the house in the street, then the rooms in the house, then the elements in the rooms.

Put another way, why would you decide on a wallpaper before you decide on the other things? Maybe you want to use the wallpaper, but doing that causes other problems that you have to solve. Usually, people have the least flexibility with the colour of the floor. Are you going to leave it the same colour? Can you make it almost black? Rugs? What was your intention when you decided to use clear pastels with a muted brown floor? Was that a problem or was the juxtaposition something you were aiming for? The hallway will link rooms decorated in what way and how will it link them?

Natalie Very interesting. So have you painted any rooms in the house yet-or is this wallpaper your starting off point?

SPKCreative Abstract Art www.spkcreative.com I love the wallpaper. Considering the floor color, go with the white that Bobbi P suggested or pink- or purple-based brown, indigo or navy on the upper half of the wall, ceiling and trim. Get a beautiful crystal or fuchsia glass chandelier and sconces.

Best,
Shari

anitajoyce What about a nice light grey. The grey color above the chair rail will help balance out the boldness of the pretty bright pink. For the trim, go with white. Grey is a great neutral!

Jade Have you committed to this wallpaper? It would make most men cringe! It would however be lovely in a powder room or girl's bedroom.

It makes such a statement and I think you'll tire of it very quickly.

You have a beautiful Victorian home that many people would love to have. I'm not sure why you'd choose such a garish color to use in it.

I'd suggest doing more research into decor for this type of home before proceeding. You have such a wonderful opportunity to decorate a home this lovely.

There are many books available on Victorian decor and even a search on this sight would give you some valuable insight.

I think this wallpaper is a big mistake!

Casart Coverings This has been an excellent discussion with some very good suggestions. Since the pattern is large and the color bold, I would stick to the white chair rail, but be sure to match the white to the background white of the wallpaper. I agree with Jade that it will be dramatic and you may tire of it. That's when it's an advantage to use a removable, repositionable and reusable wallcovering that you can change whenever you want and reuse later. We have some damask patterns (and some in vibrant colors as illustrated below) but not in a vibrant pink. You can view those on our Patterns page http://www.casartcoverings.com/patterns.html and see some room views on our Gallery page.http://www.casartcoverings.com/gallery.html

bchic Of all the comments given, color-wise I would go for the gray too. However, I do have a question about how visible this area is to the living and dining rooms. While the color doesn't have to "match" but it should compliment other rooms that are visible to this area. Good luck!

TanCalGal Interior. Please submit photos of one room at a time for color suggestions.

Exterior. Looks like house needs repair work prior to painting. Here's a good article on various Victorian houses. Choose a neutral exterior color from here or link below:

klmt My first reaction was black - but that was based on your simple question - what color chair rail would look good with this wallpaper? What you have to do, though, is consider the house as a whole. The exterior of the house should look appropriate to its environment, whether that's a neighborhood or the natural landscape around it. Next, the interior should have something in common with the exterior, particularly the entry area and whatever rooms you see when you walk in the door. Then, you need SOMETHING to bind the interior rooms together. The best way, in my opinion, to do this is to decide on one trim color and use it throughout your home. It can be natural or stained wood, white or a color of your choice. Additionally, keep the floors the same (or as close as possible color-wise because you sometimes need different materials in bath or kitchen) throughout the house for good visual flow. Now you can get as wild with colors and patterns as you like, and your home will still have a cohesive, not chaotic, feel.

kimmy1967 Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going with a nice neutral color on the exterior. Our home is unique in our neighborhood. The property was originally 5 acres. which is now shared the 250 year old stone colonial next door. It was one family years ago that owned both properties. The other home is white with green trim, but not victorian in style. The other homes range from modern to traditional. Most are wooded lots.
I moved in a couple years ago to 80's style mauve wallpaper throughout. I have painted the living room a nice yellow with with crown model. The other side of the hall, the dining room is a french blue color on the bottom with a tan above the chair rail. A deeper tan on crown and chair rail. The wallpaper will definitely be a statement. I have looked at SO many damask wallpapers and hubby says they are too bland, hense the fushia. He is cool with it actually. The plus is that it is self adhesive and easily removable and was inexpensive as a friend had ordered double what she had needed and sold the rest to me cheap. I attached pictures of the dining room that was stripped of wallpaper and painted, right after it was painted. The hall photo shows the current wallpaper,,,which i cant take another day!!

Vikrant Sharma Homez Hi Kimmy , I love your Houzz ! I think a white will be Good ! Love the Grandpa Clock in the Dining .

weskimrg Love the bold fushia!. Think grey would be a nice complimentary color-- a dark granite gray would be a sharp contrast or a lighter gray for less intensity. Gold luck,

TanCalGal Exterior neutral will be nice. You area sounds varied and beautiful.

Dining Room: I like the DR. For a change sometime you might consider painting the walls all white and the blue cupboard slightly darker flat blue.
Adrienne Chinn Design

For now, to blend in the DR chairs: I'd paint the chairs the light upper wall tan or paint the upper tan wall white.
Converted Carriage House

The tall case clock is missing the center finial. If you're into whimsey, I've seen pottery vases placed there or you can buy reproduction pieces on Ebay (or Google).

I'd like the wallpaper with white trim + white wall. You'll probably have to have the paint mixed to duplicate the correct tone or experiment with various whites yourself.
Phinney RIdge Modern bedroom

You could also paint the trim white and the upper wall gray Modern Baby Room

Barb Black crown molding and the above section of the chair rail cream or white

decorob I like the idea of a nice medium grey with white trim, or I thnk a nice light yellow would be pretty. Do you get much light in the hall?

judyg White is my choice for a paint color. I would put the damask on top of the chair rail.

kimmy1967 decorob...no, the center hall is not bright at all, and the lighting is poor at this point.. Judyg...just the top and white on the bottom?
