rosemarie105 I would paint the mantle white, or change it all together from something a little bigger.
Maybe add a little color to the walls.
Don't know your budget, but hardwood floors would look great!
Maybe some curtains that contrasted more with the wall, they kind of blend.
Curtain Lady Design Larger "something" over the mantel- maybe a mirror and sconces. Possibly pull the chair out from the corner toward the hearth. If you change the window treatment- raise the pole up higher above the window- makes the room seem taller.
capiontayhas rosemarie105 - Thanks for the compliment. This is a rental so hardwood floors are out of the question. I'd love to add color but I have no idea of what color to paint.
Bonnie I agree with the idea to get some new curtains. You could really use a nice pair of drapes to help expand the area and give the room a little punch. Mount curtain hardware to ceiling and get longer drapes that hit the floor. Also, the drapery hardware should extend beyond the window by about 12 to 14 inches. Try this and watch the room transform. If you have any drawing skill you can try to draw out the window with curtains as described and the way you have it now. Compare and you will see what happens. Your room will appear more spacious. Also it would be nice if you could put a chair on each side of the fireplace to balance and fill that space. You need a bigger picture for over the mantle or even a mirror. And maybe a pair of tall candlesticks or topiaries...plus your shorter items. Arrangement on the mantle does not have to be symmetrical but should be balanced. You might even try to put two chairs opposite the couch to balance seating area bit not sure what you have on far right. If you have tv on far right you could use swivel chairs across from couch that coukd swivel around for tv viewing. Not sure what colors to recommend as this partly depends on your preference and othe collrs in home.... And what if any other elements in the room you are willing to change. The stongest piece in the room is the white couch, which seems kind of modern. The rugs don't really add to your room. With a white couch you could go with any bright color or you could go the pastel route. A light to medium blue on the wall, white fireplace to match moulding and a rug with some blue, white, yellow or whatever colrs you like to punch it up. Change out pillows to pick up colors in your brighter rug.
Carolina Photo To Go LLC With your new wall color I would add light drapes with grommets. You can look on JCPenney.com. Theyusu. Have many. I would also get a large ice of photography for your wall or a grouping of a similar theme. Photography can be printed on canvas abd left frameless too. I know I can customize any of the selections in my shop. Etsy.com,nancyhehmann.
