Need help choosing a color for my damask stencil in the lounge!
Hi everybody!

I have finally received my stencil from America which I have attached to show you all. I have been looking for ages for the right wallpaper but unfortunately have not been able to find an orange wallpaper that i found suitable for my lounge to go with my ethnic/earthy theme. So I decided to paint my little feature wall orange in the meantime!

I have recently had the idea to try stencils and decided to go for damask stencil as I think it goes very nicely with the moroccan theme. It has finally arrived and I wanted to do it this weekend but realised i have no idea in what color to do it?? I have done some research to get ideas but there's not a lot of orange walls out there that have been stenciled lol

To give you an idea of the decor of the decor in my lounge I have attached a picture with the other side of the wall. beautiful texture orange cushions are coming this weekend to go on my nice old seats!
My rug is sort of mushroom brown and the rest of the walls are white. So my main colors are white, brown and orange! My furniture is party MDF except my table and chairs.

Any idea in what color I should stencil my wall over the orange? I was thinking about brown, but then i am not sure what tone of brown, baring in mind, my lounge is generally darker than the pictures, especially with winter coming up.

If anyone has pictures for inspiration, I would appreciate them too, i have searched houzz but cant find anything that hits the spot.

Thanks to anyone who find the time to post.

Steph xx

Darzy Lavender/purple! Oh yeah..semi gloss.
dcer I would do either a purple, or a red, like your drapes! Or, you could do a chocolate brown...so many choices!:)
steffie i dont know whether the red would clash?? Im not a fan of my curtains, they're my landlords and really really heavy, so never bothered taking them off just in case i break 'em. lol! Im glad they fit with my ethnic theme im going for though. I'd need to photoshop a picture with a colored stencil and see how it looks like.

judyg A deeper orange for all the walls. You didn't say what the wall finish is now, but do the stencil in a glossier finish. So the orange walls would like similar to this throw.

steffie what do you mean, the surface?

Thank you for the tip, i will definitely go for a glossier finish with the stencil.
Manon Floreat You could opt for a tone on tone with the stencil, such as terracotta and orange. It will be a subtle treatment. The second photo shows the effect. Or you could go for more contrast with plum and orange like below. If you go that route, you'll probably want to incorporate more plum accents.

olldbobbi judy judy judy you beat me to the throw!
olldbobbi steffie, if you've never stenciled before, may I suggest you practice on a piece of cardboard first?
steffie omg what can I say??? these pictures are marvellous!! I think i will be going for a tone on tone color, the throw and pillow are spot on!!

Thanks Bobbi, no i never have, im really nervous?? I have been doing research as well and found you can get stencil paint, but cant find any in shop around here so will have to do with normal paint NOT watered down to avoid it running down and behind the stencil. Have you stenciled before? Have you got any tips on how to do it? Trying on a piece of cardboard sounds good. Why did I not think of this?!
Jamieson I think turquoise, teal, fuschia, salmon, violet, chartreuse, or salmon might be nice compliments to your orange walls. If it's ethnic you're looking for I'd suggest thinking along the lines of Bollywood. Throwing a few inspiration pics. your way. Keep us posted, this looks like a really fun project!

Stanton Designs-online design services Like most people..I was going to suggest tone on tone. Get a glossy finish and your wall is really going to pop! Post pictures when you are done, love to see it!

olldbobbi steffie, I'm old and I have stenciled about a billion times! Can you get craft paint? Where are you exactly? Craft paint is really what you want, How big an area do you plan on stenciling?

Do you plan to use a stencil brush, or a sea sponge?

Here's my recommendation to you: Get some blank craft paper, or poster board, and hang it on the wall using painters tape. If you're going to be stenciling a wall, practicing on a horizontal surface will not give you the skill you need.

You can also use a spray stencil adhesive to prevent the paint from running down the back, I've never done this so I can't give you a recommendation.

My biggest tip is that your brush or sponge must be almost dry before you stencil. You dip your brush into the paint and then wipe most of it off to prevent running.

steffie The pictures are gorgeous, the Jeffrey Johnson one has all the colors that i have in my lounge. Though mainly orange, mine is mainly white. God i wish i had those gorgeous pillows from the Liz Stewart picture!! I wish i had more space in my little lounge, unfortunately i dont, i have that big unit which kind of makes my lounge look smaller but if i wouldnt have this unit, i wouldnt know where to put everything i have in it that is actually essential, this room and my bedroom are the ONLY proper rooms I have, and i have next to no storage, which is why im glad i have this unit that actually doesnt look bad, it just doesnt quite fit with my theme as the color of it is MDF, which i could paint it somehow darker.. MDF is funny though, cant really paint it, comes off.

steffie I am from the UK, i have found craft paint (i had looked at this before, but didnt know what Rust-Oleum paint was) http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Browse?storeId=10151&langId=110&c_2=2|cat_16849219|Hobbies+and+Crafts|15778164&c_1=1|category_root|Decorating|16849219&c_3=3|cat_15778164|Craft+Paints|15778180

Unfortunately i can only find spray paints, i thought we shouldnt use spray paints? The only orange one they have is this one though :
http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Browse?storeId=10151&langId=110&r_1=4|Finish|Gloss|1&c_3=3|cat_15778164|Craft+Paints|15778180&c_2=2|cat_16849219|Hobbies+and+Crafts|15778164&c_1=1|category_root|Decorating|16849219&r_3=5|Colour|Oranges|1
Its the same color as the wall!!
olldbobbi I've only used craft paints, maybe someone else has used something different? Rustoleum???? No, I don't think so. Craft paints are very easy to use but won't give you the gloss you want, unless you use a glossy craft paint which is translucent.
steffie Bobbi, I will stencil all the orange wall that you can see.
Jade, unfortunately I wont be able to remove the shelf and my two picture frames because i have nowhere else to go with it. My flat is only 34 square meters and this and my bedroom are basically the only rooms i have and therefore have practically zero storage. So unfortunately it looks more clutered than i would've preferred it to be, but i have no choice. In the UK they cram as many people in the smallest places, and you pay a fortune on top of it as well.

If it looks good and i didnt mess it up, i will definitely post a before and after picture!!
steffie when you look at the link i posted from Homebase, you can select a gloss finish. What do you think?
Jamieson Hey Steffie! Here's a link on how to repaint MDF. It might take a little elbow grease, but could be a fun weekend project! http://www.ehow.com/how_7844297_repaint-mdf-kitchen-cabinets.html
8 months ago ·
steffie Hey Jamie, thanks for the link! I had seem something very similar before and have tested it on a little IKEA table i had bought a while ago. I sanded it down a little but the paint still didnt stick as you could still scratch it off and it looked horrible. My unit is really beautiful and it would just ruin it :/ Im too scared as I think i'll regret it and this unit cost me 260€ quite a few years ago back in France.
steffie I really cannot find anything about craft paint, is there perhaps another word for it?? even googling it, im not finding anything! :(
8 months ago ·
olldbobbi The best brand is Ceramcoat, then there's Americana, Martha Stewart. Where did you buy your stencil? They should have a full line of stencil paints. If they don't let me know, ok?
judyg Whoa, Bobbi P, you are not old! Don't tell. I have been enjoying your comments/suggestions and I am confident that you know what you are talking about. And, I am way older than you, but that gives us an advantage...the been there, done that advantage. (I did beat you to the throw! Yeah!)
olldbobbi judy, bless your heart! And I seriously doubt you are older than me. What's that expression: Old age and wisdom will overcome youth and enthusiasm everytime??? hee hee
8 months ago · ·
judyg O K, Bobbi P, where were you in 1966 and what was your favorite song? This answer will definitely put this age thing to rest! (Does Houzz allow betting?)

olldbobbi 1966 I was still in my beloved New Jersey and Homeward Bound by Simon & Garfunkel. And YOU???
olldbobbi Steffie, did you find any stencil paints?
selenavaz Hey I think Brown is going to be great to go with your Orange wall. Especially if you want the theme to be earthen and ethic then orange and brown look great. Go ahead with it (only after you practice a bit) also post in the final picture of what you have ultimately done. All the best

dcwjes Gold. Or if you used flat paint on the wall, use just a clear gloss or a glossy version of the same color, it will be noticeable without being very obvious

olldbobbi judy judy judy, let's cut the cr*p - 1952. Beat that!

olldbobbi dcwjes - Clear gloss. Brilliant!
steffie Thanks to all the people who posted comments, inspiration and everything in between!! Bobbi you are a gem!! Thank you for the spanish website, no hablo espanol pero voy tratar haha Need to sneak my way into this website and ask them if they ship internationally as i cant add anything to the basket for some reason. Maybe its just me being blonde.

I have gone to Homebase this morning and have purchased a Dulux glossy mixing color, as the only colors they had in gloss are maybe black white brown etc... It is Dulux though! I will do a test on cardboard and see how it goes. I may have to do several layers as if its a runny color i need to do little at a time as you said.

Im excited!!! My Orange cushions arrived too and compliment my orange wall so wonderfully. Ah I love it.
olldbobbi steffie, I'm so very happy for you! If you have trouble, we're here to help. And if you can't get the exact paint or color you want, let me know, I will send you some. Buena suerte!
steffie I forgot to say, you know the craft paints they sell at Homebase, well they're absolutely tiny, there's not a lot of choices in colors (maybe bright kids colors!) and no simple ones, they even had bloody glitter in it.... and where expensive for those mini little pots they were selling! I thought i need to try normal glossy paint and hopefully be patient and careful. S-o h-a-r-d!!
steffie haha cheers bobbi! I found the color we have on the wall with Dulux (is that a brand you know?) and my orange is actually called Flame Frenzy 5, and the one i bought is Spicy Sandalwood 6!!! Its beautiful!!! Its sunny today so my window reflexes the sun on my wall so i can see exactly what im doing.
steffie my wall looks brighter than it actually it, it is much paler than the bright color on the picture j posted.
olldbobbi steffie, Yes!!! Craft paints are about 1 ounce. You will be amazed to find out how little you will use. No, I'm not familiar with Dulux, might be under a different name across the pond. Practice, practice practice til you are 100% comfortable with your technique. You'll be brilliant! And if you don't send us "after" pictures, I may not be able to forgive you!!!
apennameandthata Dude, I like your work. Consider using a transparent gloss so you get a contrast of textures rather than colours. Otherwise, you might over egg the custard.

Too, please paint the rest of the room that colour. Just for me. Pleeease?
steffie I would love to paint the rest, but i cant because it makes the room too dark and very small (i dont get a lot of light in here), that is why i only did a corner, because i HATE bare walls just still wanted a touch of color and style.
steffie I have done a test! I had to put two layers of paint as the color was very light. I used my hair dryer to dry the layer a little lol It worked though! Took two pictures, one with flash and one without. The one without shows what the color of my wall really looks like, the one with flash, shows a brighter color but also the gloss effect of the paint. Im really pleased!! It looks like the picture of the stencil i posted originally which made me buy it. What do you think? Am i ready to stencil my little wall?! :)
olldbobbi Excellent! If you feel you're ready, you're ready!
steffie i feel that i will need to do a third layer because otherwise the contrast wont be that great between my wall and my stencil. Do you agree? Maybe it looks darker because obviously cardboard is! It may appear lighter on my wall. Actually, i might be right. I will see. Thanks for your continuing feedback Bobbi, its great to have support, even when thousands of miles separate two people.
olldbobbi Don't give it a third coat today, let it settle, then tomorrow you can make that decision, ok? And of course you are very welcome. I'm here for you!
steffie it actually works very well just with one coat, im so happy! Tomorrow? Am I supposed to leave the stencil on the wall until the next day??
olldbobbi No ma'am, you can remove and reposition the stencil at any time, just make sure there is no wet paint on the back before you reposition!
judyg Bobbi P, beat you again! You do the math, but when you were listening to Simon & Garfunkel, I was dancing to "Hot Town, Summer in the City" in a club and I was 22.
Ha ! (Although I am not getting any pleasure at all from winning this one.)
steffie Thanks Bobbi, I am almost half way through my wall! I struggle with corners though and am unsure as to what I should do... the stencil can be bent, but not to 90degres and stay that way.
paulamig DO NOT use regular paint!!!! It will be too thin and runny. You will do yourself a big favor if you find some stencil paint - it comes in small pots, or even easier-to-use crayons. To use the crayons, you simply rub them onto a paper plate, and use your stencil brush to pick up the color. It goes on almost dry and you choose the depth of color by layering the paint on. You also get a nice shading effect.
paulamig here is a link to the stencil crayons: http://www.stencil-library.com/docs/cat506.htm
8 months ago ·
steffie I am just charging my camera at the moment and will post a picture of what I have done so far. I was worried about regular paint but i used very little and actually it wasnt that runny at all and looks lovely, I did a test as you can see from the above picture, what is wrong with that?
paulamig Nothing wrong with your photos - but you will have to be so careful to avoid getting any paint on the back of the stencil, or having it drip behind the stencil while you work. You are doing a large area, and I'm just trying to save you aggravation. I did a whole room with a multicolor stencil, and was very happy to use the dry crayons - not a bit of stray paint anywhere.
steffie I understand. I have saved the website you have given me as I am sure I will need it one day! My bookmarks are full of pages like that. I have taken a few pictures to show you what my wall looks like so far (i am obviously not finished as you can see!), and to be compleeeetely honest with every single one of you - I AM IN LOVE WITH MY WALL.

Might do it later, or leave it for another night...
