Cherry Kitchen redo
I have cherry cabinets in my kitchen, they are about 10 years old, but I am bored with them. I would like to paint some of them off white, and leave some of the cherry cabinets, to make it look like I did it as part of a plan. Is there a good way to paint cabinets so they don't look painted, ie, should I use a paint sprayer, hire someone, use only oil based paint - suggestions?

Dytecture I would have them professional sprayed.

olldbobbi That's no small amount of cabinets. Your table matches, same color, your backsplash looks pinkish, you have a lot of cherry trim.

The cabinets are in great shape; however, if you are convinced you want them to be off white, hire a professional. You will want to change your backsplash and countertop when you see the difference. And possible the table top too.

Another poster has the same dilemma as you, we suggested she sell the cabinets she has and use the money to buy new, white cabinets.

ssawic2 Thanks, also thinking about changing the pinkish backsplash (it matches the countertup, corian with whit black grey and rosy color) and countertops as the first step, and seeing if I like it better with just those changes.

feeny If i were you, I'd keep the cabinets and change the wall color and backsplash, both of which are too pink and compete with the cherry, as Bobbi notes. I think that with updates in those areas, emphasizing contrast with the cabinets, your kitchen will have a whole new look without tampering with the cabinets.

But I agree with Dytecture to have it done professionally if you do decide to paint them.

olldbobbi That is a good start. More small changes could include wall paint color and new handles and knobs, and even a new floor. You have stainless appliances, work with the silver color for your countertop and backsplash. I happen to love stainless tile, check some of these out: http://www.houzz.com/photos/products/stainless-tile

ssawic2 Thanks for your comments - I think I would like to warm up the backsplash, countertops, and floor, with light colors, thinking about granite countertops with black and either olive green or tan, and then follow up with coordinating backsplash, and tile floors - Thoughts?

ssawic2 I like the black granite counter top idea, I think, but what about the backsplash? I like the black for countertops because then I don't have to do the floor right away. That also opens up a lot of ideas for the walls.

olldbobbi Depending on the amount of movement in your granite you could go with either glass tiles (beautiful!) or subway tiles (traditional).

DaVinci Floors & Granite Your cabinets are beautiful and once painted, will never have the luster they have now. There are many looks you can achieve by changing out countertops, backsplash, paint, floor etc. The suggestion to sell them to buy white ones is very good advice.

ssawic2 thanks for the suggestions , and the images. I'm pretty much decided to go with new countertops and backsplash instead of painting the cabinets, now just have the task of picking granite

cjarrold How about a beautiful rich dark soapstone for the countertops?
