Moving in soon-- quick all over paint color?
We are moving in to a 1970s colonial and want to do a overall paint job to get rid of dirty walls and hideous colors. We don't have much furniture to worry about matching and are on a tight time frame. Is it a bad idea to just make it easy and pick one neutral color throughout? We just don't have time to think about decorating yet. ... If yes what are some updated colors? Thanks!

judyg Sure you can do one color...BM White Dove, Acadia White, Simply White, etc but the key here is to do a matte finish on the wall and semi gloss trim. Not a waste of time as you could live with this for a long time.

seg189 Thanks, judyg. Do you have any ideas for a color that isn't just "white"? I do like it, but sometimes it can feel a bit too sterile, I think (not to mention w/ two dogs and a toddler, we may not be able to keep it too "white"! I'm wondering if there is something else? Thank you!

feeny Here are a couple of popular soft neutrals to consider, but do get samples and check them out against your furniture and in the rooms:
Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
Sherwin Williams Urban Putty

Donald Don't forget the ceilings! A hundred times easier to paint the ceiling before you move in versus dodging and covering furniture.

Roots and Rafters Benjamin Moore Pale Oak is a light greige that is beautiful in a lot of different rooms. It goes with most any fabric color, as well. BM paints are also easily washable, which is nice when you have kids and dogs.

As judyg said, make sure you do the trim in semi-gloss. For that I recommend BM White Dove. For the ceiling, try BM Super White in a flat finish.

judyg I am understanding that you want one color for the entire house, and that is including the woodwork? I recommended the whites because once you get settled your woodwork will be fine and you can roll the walls any color you decide on.

Have you looked At BM Overcast OC-43? Not very exciting on the chip, but when it is up on the walls it is a beautiful neutral and you can also paint the woodwork the same color (different finish).

seg189 I would like white trim. The color ideas are great. Thanks.

mgross0818 We recently completed construction of our new home. I will say paint was the biggest challenge. If I can give you ONE piece of advice... No matter what a color looks like in the store, on the chip or on the web, it will look completely different in YOUR home. The same color will look different in every room. It will look different at different times of day.

I have the same color repeated a few times in my house (a hall, a guest bath with no natural light and in my master bath that has two huge windows). It looks like a different color in every area.

A warning about grey. (my entire home is painted in shades of grey). Grey will take on the undertones and it will amplify. If the grey you choose has any purple, green, blue hues they will scream!

Get the quart and try it on the wall. Look at it at different times of day and in different lighting situations. Don't put two colors next to each other that you are trying to decide between. They will look different NEXT to each other than they would alone.

I used BM White Dove for all my trim (Doors, base board, crown molding).
For the main great room area the grey that worked best for us came from a children's BM collection from target!

judyg Great: white woodwork and a wall color that is not white and can hold its own in every room.
In the blues: BM Lookout Point 1646. In a taupe: BM Raccoon Hollow 978. In a gray: BM Stone Harbor 2111-50 or BM Graytint 1611.
