Painting furniture
I am in the middle of updating my living room. I am going for a colorful theme so I have been trying to find a colorful console to go in my living room to display some pictures, knick knacks, etc.

I havent found anything and what I have found, I have found in the standard furniture colors... black, maple, oak, etc. This is the set that I want so my questions is, can I paint it? And if I do, what would be the process for this? Keep in mind, im not very handy but with detailed instructions, I think I can follow.... :)

I was thinking that I just need to get some primer, paint it with primer and then paint it with the color that I am interested in changing it to (for me, that would be teal or yellow).

Elise Yes paint it but sand it lightly with a fine grit paper first. Wipe it down with a tack cloth then prime, two coats if going with a light color, and paint it. Have your primer tinted to go with the final paint color.

dcer I love the colors you are considering! Yes, definitely give it a good sanding before you prime and paint!.Good Luck! By the way, the table would look great painted with very glossy paint, almost like those lacquered asian pieces.

anitajoyce Don't paint it! I like it the color it is. Just add colorful accents .

Manon Floreat Love the lacquered idea.

Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. Hi Iyare I, Marie Here. Whatever you decide to do, you'll have to "do it" to the mirror as well.

I wouldn't paint it - I agree with anitajoyce, add some simple vases or chair with colour to get that burst your looking for.

What I would do is either silver or gold leaf it! You can get this affect with paint, in the Modern Masters paint from Benjamin Moore - below are two photos, one of gold leaf and one of silver in a two toned finish. Either way, you get your wow factor in another neutral - then add your colour as your personality and mood changes! Good Luck - and, if you do go for metalic paint, be sure to ask your local professional for help as the type of wood is needed and the proper steps need to be given for that paint.

Here is the modern masters metallic paint website:

Iyare I So the second and third pictures are what I currently have now. The first picture with everything on it is everything I ordered for my living room update. The goal is to get rid of all the black, pull the furniture in from the walls facing the fireplace. I will be getting rid of the television and those black ladder shelves. The painting in the middle of the first picture is what inspired my choices. It is a 60 x 48 and that will go over my mantle. I wanted to paint the mantle and put it on the wall with the one seater (fourth picture) and get rid of the one seater. I wanted to put my fairies and small knick knacks like the love thing I got. So thats what I am trying to do. I figured with the color scheme, throwing in some dark furniture would see out of place hence why I wanted to paint it.

bevtaylor48 Prime your console table first. Then apply a water based product called Advance. This product is designed specifically for furniture. DO NOT use regular paint as it is not as durable as Advance. You can purchase it at most Benjamin Moore stores.

Elise Love your inspiration painting and color options. Definitely keep the area rug a solid color, as the rest of the room will be busy.

Your white sofas will work perfectly. Just add your color one layer at a time!

Pull accent colors out of the painting. With that painting, and the vivid colors, using colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel will be more calming: for example: blue, green and yellow.

If you choose colors opposite each other on the color wheel, like purple and yellow or turquoise and orange, then reduce the number of colors used and repeat those colors in a complementary print fabric.

Just go slowly and don't forget about adding textures and natural materials such as baskets, rattan and wicker.

Darzy I took a 30 year old queen anne style entry table/mirror with those colonial looking handles and changed it to teal with updated funky pulls. Love it. Sooo. go ahead and paint the console any color you want. It's such a wonderful pop of color and you can always paint black or change whenever the mood strikes. I just lightly sanded and gave it a coat of quality paint.

Gabberts Design Studio Great table! I love that you want to paint it yellow or teal! Good luck and post pictures when you're done!

olldbobbi Painting a mirror frame is a difficult task unless you can remove the mirror. Every ooops will be reflected in the mirror!

By Design EK I would not recommend painting the table, unless it is cheap or you find something at a resale place. It is fairly straight forward for a console, you could probably have it made and finished as you wish for a decent price. That being said I would get all of your colors and items choosen into the room before you decide on this piece. Having a neutral will ground your colors and then your nick nacs will not compete with the color of the table. You can do lots of bright colors successfully but you don't need to over do it. How about keeping the table as is but getting a bright mosaic mirror for above it?

Rebecca Behrent I think you ought to hold off painting the mirror and the table until you have everything else in place! You just might be surprised at how well the black works with everything. Painting the furniture with the colors you are thinking of may limit their ability to work with a different color scheme in the future, should you decide to change things ten or fifteen years from now. Black works surprisingly well in almost any color scheme, and from the one you're showing here, it should work very well! So don't be in a rush just yet. Give black a chance!

Rebecca Behrent Let me add that you've got very bright colors that dramatically contrast with each other - you could keep playing on the idea of dramatic contrast with white walls contrasting with black furnishings and other accents - it would fit well with the whole scheme.

East End Dezigns Bright colors are so "in" right now - I love that you are incorporating them into your room. The piece you found is beautiful. My word or caution is...if you decide to paint it you will need to know what it it made out of. If it is a laminate veneer be careful with the sanding process. Some veneers are very thin and easy to damage if you sand to much or to hard. Solid wood veneers are better to work with however you still need to exercise caution with the sanding process. You may want to check with a paint pro at one of your local paint shops. They will be able to give you great advice and set you up with the right products to use. Good luck and please post a photo of the finished piece. I would love to see how it turns out.

Mackenzie Austin Design Yes Denise! That is exactly what I was about to say. All these great suggestions about sanding, but that piece is quite possibly a thin veneer and not a solid wood. Benjamin Moore has a Melamine paint that is extremely durable and is great for painting anything "laminated". There is no need to sand, just clean with TSP first. My personal kitchen was tacky 70's laminate cabinetry that I used this paint on 8 years ago and it has held up amazingly well in my highly used kitchen.
As for to paint versus not to paint...if you LOVE colour, go for it! I would however suggest you buy a floor model and not order a new one. You can work out a great deal for something that is slightly damaged. Would love to see the finished room! Good luck!

Mackenzie Austin Design ...you could probably add a funky piece of hardware on that drawer too.

Alia B Designs As a designer, I agree with my colleagues above. If you wish to paint this, do not use a paint brush. You must make sure any grime or lacquer is removed, wipe it down thoroughly first and then paint it using a roller. This gives you a far better finish and then do the same for the mirror. Changing a look with paint is one of the easiest things you can do.
Good luck.

Iyare I Thanks all!! I appreciate the feedback. Im going to put everything else in and then decide if the dark pieces stick out or if I should paint. I will definitely post the after pictures of my living room and this console mirror combo if I paint.
