What color should I paint the front door?
I can't get the front door color right. It was a dark, dark plum before and that didn't feel right. Any suggestions? The blue feels too bright especially at night with the light shining on it. Please Help!

Studio NOO Design Your roof seems to be charcoal, I would go charcoal on the door or dark burnt orange to match your window siding.

Carolina Photo To Go LLC I agree with Studio. I would not think you would want too many colors. You could try black though since your supports are black. There is a website you can upload pics to and change colors on. I would have to google it; but an article over the weekend said the Property Brothers from the show on TV even recommended it.

Stewart Home Plan & Design Cool house, I think the colors you have fit it very well. I think you already know the blue is complimentary to the orange. I would think that the blue door standing out bright in the night would be a good thing. Kind of welcoming and fun. I think the color values also work well together but I suppose you could try a slightly greyer shade.

ksw711 I think you should do the orange or the charcoal from the roof. Painting the door charcoal would make the orange part pop even more!!

Five Horizons Development Get rid of the door. Pick up a single lite fir door slab from Home Depot for $180, hang it and stain it or paint it.

jck910 how about 2 shades darker of the orange and just paint the door not the sidelight

bammer56 I like the idea of a grayer shade of blue ...

decoenthusiaste I like the door and orange popout, but I think the issue here is the white trim. Try charcoal on all of it - door, sidelight, and windows. Fun place! Try some fun contemporary chairs in place of the off the shelf ones, or some adirondacks painted black. I would bump up the xeriscape factor quite a bit and replace the standard issue concrete walkway. Search the box above for "xeriscape" under dropdown "photos" for some more ideas to really make the curb appeal here jump exponentially!

mpoulsom I think I would paint the white trim you have going on first, to the charcoal gray color. That alone may make a difference. I think Black could be a wrong choice, no offense to anyone, but I think it would then truly look like halloween. Orange, black and gray??
Maybe a slightly darker duller blue, if you like the idea of a blue door.
Let me ponder this.... hmmm

tatts You have a severly modern house with a Colonial 6-panel door. That doesn't work at all. neither do the skinny little strips of white trim--it looks like someone forgot to paint over the primer.

I'd paint the white trim the same color grey as the rest of the trim and get a darkish nautral wood door (not oak, get a fine grained wood)--and not a plain slab (they look like closet doors). Check Andersen Windows/Doors for ideas.

houssaon I agree with painting the white trim to dark grey. It will make all the difference. You might want to try your dark plum again with the trim painted.

mpoulsom tatts, you are completely right on about the door style! You need a modern door style-wise.

another modern style door with a sidelight....and actually maybe a lighter gray (lighter than your house color) or metal door would be cool....like stainless.

Chandani I like the house...just needs a little tweaking! I agree with the other posters about the style of the door...and like Five Horizon's suggestion. I'd paint the white trim the same colour grey as the roof & portico and paint the door a darker shade of the same grey. I quite like the orange. Another alternative is to paint the section around the window (what is now orange) a lighter shade of the grey trim and the front door the same orange or a more burnt orange.

olldcan I agree too that's the wrong style of door for that house. I'd purchase a flat panel, have it covered in copper and paint the trim charcoal, keep the sidelites.

mkcslc Thanks everyone for your comments! Believe me I would have changed the door in a heartbeat but even thought it looks like a crappy 6 paneled door it was quite expensive because it is very insulated as well as the glass on the side. This house was based on function more than looks when we built it and we were trying not to make it too modern in a simple neighborhood. I did the online http://www.valsparpaint.com/en/explore-colors/painter/virtual-painter.html and went with a charcoal color. It looks pretty good. As far as the trim I need to keep it white because all of the other windows on the house are white and actually look good. I will keep tweaking it!

Elizabeth Bishop Door design is wrong. Go for a contemporary style, glass would be my recommendation, I also like paulsem's ideas

anitajoyce The burnt orange color that is on the window and or the color of the flower pots would look great on the house.

mvanderheiden There is a small grey/ green shrub in the front garden (left side as seen here). That colour would look lovely. I think your burnt orange is the pop! And yes I would paint door trim too from white to either the grey/green or your grey roof colour. Love your style.

public Don't worry, no matter what color you paint that door it's not going to help. Just replace it with a flat panel wooden. Mahogony or Maple stained.

Reico Kitchen & Bath I agree with Studio. Tie in another color that is already there instead of trying to add a new color the mix.

dega43 First I would consider changing the brown/rust/orange shade on the bay to the darker grey/blue of the roofline or the lighter shade same as main colour. That to start would make the whole house look larger and not so chopped up. Then I would choose a whole other colour for the front door, possibly the brown/rust if that's a colour you love, but be bold, better another colour. Not any blues or greys if you are wanting something distinct. Perhaps burgundy or reds, lime or another green, yellow but definitely not orange. Paint is so inexpensive and very easy to change on a door if you are unhappy, but when you walk up to your door at the end of the day it should be inviting and put a smile on your face. Sorry for rambling. Good luck. Please post completed project.

Streetseed I would stick with the light and dark grays that are already colouring your home, I would paint the rust coloured area the light gray and the door the dark gray. It will look better when the colours are cohesive. Good luck!

Lynne Lightowler_Buck I quite like the change to a charcoalish door going with the black supports. There's a great Ben color out there titled Soot that's an awesome blue-black, which has depth in it. Keep the orange/rust on the left as it fits so well with the roof line design. The whole front is quite an artistic statement, so overall I think you built a fun place. You guys rock!

victorianbungalowranch I think you can keep the sidelight and door frame and just change the door fairly reasonably. If you are not comfortable hanging it yourself with shims and chiseling out your own hinges to match the frame, a skilled carpenter can help you out. Otherwise measure carefully so that it will fit.

http://www.crestviewdoors.com/ Crestview has a nice line of modern-type doors and even do-it-yourself kits to customize a slab door. It also has a design your own door tool where you upload a picture and try different styles and colors out.

Although paint can help, the door style will always look not quite right with the rest of the house. If you can't afford it now, perhaps it would be something to save up for because it is such an important part of any house, especially for something as unique as what you built.

Painting the frames will help too--just be sure to do it all the way around. If they are vinyl, that might not be the best option though. Most paint manufacturers have tools to help you see what a color will look like on your house, although they can be some work to fiddle around with to get the masks right.

BTW, my grandmother's mid-century modern house had a limed oak slab front door with a plain sidelight and it looked great and has held up well for more than 50 years. You can do it in any color you want from subtle to bold. It is easy to do--basically you stain or paint the door the color you want and fill in the grain with colored wax--but it looks modern and marvelous.

4Style Great house! I agree with others who have recommended painting the white trim. It will help with the continuity of color of the house. Also, change the door style. It is not so much about changing the color as it is the style. Go with a clean and simple-line modern/contemporary door in a natural wood;either solid or veneer and a beautiful, rich stain to match your surrounding landscape. An all glass door, or glass door with horizontal lines, could be an interesting option. Good luck!

decoenthusiaste The new door wins by at least 3 to 1. The door is the only thing that doesn't fit the house. Can't really imagine that the rest of it fits the neighborhood anyway, so why not make your home the showstopper it really is? I think once you see the grey around the windows, you'll appreciate how nice it will look all around your home. Right now they look like a new installation that is waiting for paint. These few little things - window trim, door, and more landscaping - will draw compliments from the neighbors I bet!

mkcslc Thank you for your comments! Here is what we have come up with. This is the new vision! We used the same angles as the house and the outer angles are rusted metal and the inside is brushed. We have a wall in our house using these same materials. The wall is really cool.
