Need some decorative ideas for top of wardrobe
I use this rather large ikea wardrobe to store coats and shoes in the living area of my condo. What type of decorative object or frames can I put on top (can't be too heavy) to make it look less boxy and less imposing in this space? My colour scheme is mostly gray and white and I have dark wood floors. Thanks very much!

itctf Use some baskets for additional storage if your look is contemporary then use the canvas type. You can also add some plants.

trc59 There alot of different patterns and sizes of boxes. Maybe a black and white pattern with a bright pink or lime green stacked on top of each other with the vase that is on the floor. To the left side of the wardrobe mirros to reflect the light or some large pictures.

olldbobbi I had a set of three pantries like that once. I didn't put anything on top, but what I did do was find a textured grass cloth type wallpaper for the doors which I framed with narrow molding. Looked great! I don't have them any more but if I did I would attach a picture for you.

How about decals? Something fun and creative that won't cost a lot and you can change on a whim. This one the birdcage can go on the empty wall left of the cabinets and the birds over top.

Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. Hi tal22, I have the exact same ones in my design studio - don't put anything on top, or add moulding to the doors - (if they slide). If they are swing doors, you can add to them - but why would you? it'll take away the chic high gloss finish...
I'd add a bold paint colour to that wall, or hang a wallpaper panel over it (see photo with purple and pink wall paper panels) Great way to get a burst of colour and texture, just buy one roll of wallpaper, and either build or buy a blank canvas, staple the wallpaper to the canvas - voila! you have a hit of colour/art for your space... A nice plant is always great to have a bit of life to the room - if not - a unique bowl or sculpture - make it big, make it something that will add to the space and not look too junky...Wall tattoos are also a fun idea - if you can find a tattoo that is textural - I don't care for the "word, or kitchy" ones...good luck!

Manon Floreat I don't think you need anything on top of the wardrobe. I suggest shelves on the left to mimic those on the right for symmetry.

annoulaxeni Put a big basket with some branches/twigs/grasses in it, and in the evening shine a low-watt uplighter up through them which will make magic on your ceiling. You can accomplish all of this easily at Ikea. And at least in the evening with the light on, no-one will even notice the cupboard underneath (not that I find it at all ugly, it's just very plain ...)

Butler Specialty Company How about one of those long and low candle holders like you would see in a fireplace? We had one in our fireplace in Texas that would be ideal for that space!!

Courtney Kleeman Design I would continue the same shelving that is over the desk so that you end up with a couple of shelves that span both the wardrobe and desk. Then you can put patterned storage boxes above for seasonal storage. The shelves will help to add architecture and structure to the space without just being decorative.

carolhenry Paint the wall the same colour as the raspberry/fuschia chair. place a trifold moroccan style screen painted in glossy white on the wall or floor to balance the wardrobe. An urn or pot in front with a small palm plant or mother in law tongue plant would round off the space, available at ikea too.

sclawson I love the idea of a fuchsia wall. I wouldn't add moulding or wallpaper or anything to the wardrobe. I like its sleek, simple, modern lines. Maybe put the vase up there with fabric-covered bins or storage boxes. Nix the baskets. Keep it modern and clean.

pentalpha Top the wardrobe with tall objects of your choice in the same shiny white - I notice your lonely giraffe in the corner - so they draw the eye up and make the unit less boxy. Since you like neutrals with only hits of colour, you might try painting the wall a darker grey, providing the natural light in your room can handle it so the final product really pops. Hang a colourful piece of art on the wall beside it. You can get all these things for low money at places like Winners and Homesense. But keeping everything on the wardrobe the same shiny white is KEY. Keeps it modern and keeps the eye moving up.

squirrelwaldie baskets or boxes are easily covered (for cheap) in whatever fabric or design you wish.

To keep with the current catwalk trends I suggest a faux leather covering on cardboard boxes with metal studs and spikes on the front in design.

lefty47 HI -- NOTHING on top but do something more with the wall instead . Paint or wallpaper or wall decals , something interesting. It's the wall that's lacking not the cabinet. The shelves on the right should not have anything displayed higher than the top of the cabinet. Then I think you will like the way it looks better, less cluttered too.

hotnovember Hello,
I absolutely would not add anything to the top (then it all has to come off when you dust up there LOL). Definitely would paint that huge white wall, or wallpaper (wallpaper is trending bigtime now). If possible don't butt the wardrobe next to the desk so tightly, make room and adjust the height of the shelves, it makes everything look like one big rectangle. I would paint the wall a grey or if you like colour get a wallpaper print that has the pink colour of the chair in it. That would look amazing and soften the whole look.
Less is more...

Mint Design I suggest hanging photos, prints, a mirror in different sizes and frames for an eclectic look or all the same frame for a cleaner look...up the side wall and across the top. Please do not place anything on top of the wardrobe. I also like the idea of a fun, large print hot pink and white wallpaper and would add a mirror over it. Hope this helps. :)

lezzzza Some natural wood tone, perhaps a sculptural bowl. African drums or rustic grain bucket. Pick up color of wood floors. Ying n yang; rough on sleek, dark on light.

amature You seem to like crisp, modern, white with spots of color. If so, to continue that look how about 3 white (matching the cupboards) modern frames with either bright, simple prints or a piece of bold fabric framed three times that have the color of the chair in them or enlarged personal photos with lots of color. Keep them simple and a bit repetitious. Put the pics to the left of the cupboard, centered on that wall left to right. From top to bottom, one is centered in the space from the ceiling down to even with the top of the cupboard, the next one a bit down the top, and the next one's top is near the mid way point of the cupboard. This might take the eye away from the of bigness of the white of the cupboard and balance it. How about some simple straight reeds in the pot on the floor. On top of the cupboard - one large or three different sized kick-knacks that are of interest to you. You have a giraffe on the top shelf by the desk - you like animals? find a bigger one. Or a weather vane of an animal. Something bold in shape but simple that doesn't conflict with the pics. It could be out of wood to balance all the white . I saw a great crude wood horse from TJ Maxx at a person's house recently. Or put the white giraffe in front of 3 black plate- like baskets. Or take a long piece of wood drill some holes and stick in some short branches and put the giraffe in front. Or an oblong black, rustic container with dried pink hydrangea flowers in it. Or if you want more color a collection of different shaped solid colored ceramics. To balance the desk area with the other side hang your photo picture (that's on the top shelf) just above the desk where you can see it and get another picture - bold, simple, maybe just a flower the color of the chair or a lighter shade or complimentary color - in a white frame . Size wise It should be close in height to the other 3 pics. Or a large rectangle and prop it on the shelf. Or a long, thin rectangle of say a sunset and hang it up on the wall. Think IKEA, Marimekko fabric and Scandinavian design!

giggles60 So many great ideas! The thought that came to me was paint the wall either the same color as the chair or a slightly lighter shade of that same color. Add some more of your white shelves on the other side of the cabinet but don't place books on those. Find some nice decorative objects to put on them. A little greenery is nice anywhere. Maybe place a floral arrangement under the shelves. Make sure it is large enough so it doesn't "get lost" under there. Or as one of the suggestions, instead of the shelves find some great art or family photos. Making the family photos all in black and white might look cool. Making the pictures large enough so you would have 3 of them going vertically down. See the pics. Have fun!

Find-Design I would suggest highlighting that wall with a bold paint color or patterned wallpaper with atleast one color you can draw from and use as accents in other parts of the room to draw the "eye" panoramically throughout the space. This can be achieved with the chair color, throw pillows, vases, art work. You now have created an accent wall that is both decoratively deliberate and functional. To create symmetry and balance, I would suggest using the same floating shelves (4) on the other side of the cabinet evenly spaced and even in height with shelves above the desk . Keep the shelves uncluttered and take the opportunity to create a focal point by adding framed art, pictures, vases and items that make you smile. Remember: streamlined shelves are best so as to balance the scale of the cabinet in the middle. Don't forget to use the accent color you picked from your paint or wallpaper in some of the items for shelf display ( i.e. vase, flowers, framed artwork, tailored storage boxes, color blocking with books). Most importantly, have fun!
