How can I take my decor ideas to the next level
I love high end finishes and shelving class and sophistication but like your average girl my budget is limited. With that said, how can I take this space to the next level?

Cabell Design Studio Hello Arisa,

So far so good! Two area rugs would add warmth and structure to both of your seating areas. These don't have to be show-stopping expensive, either. A flokati under the dining area (can be found online for a couple hundred dollars) and a sisal or solid color flat weave wool under the sofas would keep the elegance you have already introduced into your space while adding texture. Best of luck!

anitajoyce Your spaces are very nice! I agree with Cabell Design Studio about the 2 rugs. One for the dinning table and in the living room. Starting with the dinning room, I would replace the picture on the wall with an abstract or a big flower picture that's in a frame, for that wow pop of color ( Target, Kohls, Walmart are some of the stores that have nice Art on a budget). I would place a table runner on the table along with a small plant or a grouping of 2 to 3 candles. Move the plant from the coffee table to the top of the wine rack. It's kind of bare. For the living room along with a rug to warm the space, add a table lamp and candles to the picture on the side table . On the coffee table place a few big picture coffee table books and a small plant or group of candles.. Remove the clock from the wall and place above the wine rack.

Darzy I think you're on great start. Looks elegant. Some tweaking ideas...I'd lower those great starbursts closer to the couch and closer together for more impact. Try the wine shelf on the blank wall in the LR and hide the outlets and maybe hang the round clock above. The dining room would look a little more dramatic by extending the rod and adding a couple more panels to make the window look wider and the dining room look more formal. The art in the dining room is kinda small for the wall. How about a BIG art piece there? Or, if you make the curtains wider, you can hang the candles scones on the side of the dining room art. You have a great space..love your furniture.

decoenthusiaste Here's an idea! Rework your wall decor. Pieces should attach visually to the piece of furniture they're above, with or near. All of your items are too high. Rule of thumb is 8-10" above the furniture. That said, take the art piece in the dining room, frame it and hang it above the wine rack - I'd move the rack to the center of the wall. If the chairs are crowded when you move the cabinet, turn the table and chairs a quarter turn and it should work. Lower the sconces so the bottom of each one is level with the center of the window sash - a natural place for the eye to fall. Add a rug if you have room for one 4 feet larger than your table. Otherwise, it will be too small. Looks like your light fixture is not centered in the space, so moving it to the middle might allow for more space for work in the rug. Should hang 35" above the table. A drum chandy would really up the design factor for you. In the living room, your clock is floating above the doorway. I don't consider clocks to be the decor item they're touted to be, but try it centered 8" above the TV if you can't find a spot for it in the kitchen. Starbursts need to be lowered and should be closer together so they do not extend past the ends of the sofa. In one pic your pillow is grey and blue in another, so I assume it reverses. I like the blue for your accent here and suggest you shop at homedecorators.com for an area rug, art and accessories to pick up on that blue. Make sure the area rug is large enough for the front feet of both sofas to rest on. Good place to find the dining rug too, and I would not want to pick dropped food out of a flokati as previously suggested. Try one in the bedroom though - great feel for bare feet! Lamps for the end tables need to be substantial. Try a ceramic base in the same blue color. You have a big empty wall where you could make a delighful reading area. Flank a decorative wood bookcase that matches the stain on the sofa legs with two upholstered armchairs in a pattern that has some of your blue in it. Add a floor lamp beside one chair and a table and lamp beside the other one. Use a matching hassock for a coffee table with a tray on top. Can't see the ceiling fixture or the foyer in these pics. Do some tweaking, post again and be sure to include fixture and foyer for more tweaks I might suggest. You'll get there!

houssaon Love the color on the walls. Very well chosen. I agree about the rugs and the starbursts should be closer together and a little lower on the wall. Bring the stars down about 6 inches and position the other two so that the longest point does not extend beyond the end of the sofa. Is there another place for the clock? I'd put the "snake" plants in larger decorative containers.

Nicole Smith You have a great start, however I would add a rug under the dining table and in front of the sofa's. I would also invest in a beautiful chandelier over the dining table and 2 different table lamps in the living room. I would take the picture down and get a really big mirror, possibly move that art over the bar. I would get more color on the table with a runner flowers or some kind of bowl with colorful items in it. I would move the starburst mirrors down and closer together. Also the flower on the table has to go. Get more artwork to fill the other walls. Good job so far.

Arisa Jenkins Thank you for all your suggestions. In the dining room does it have to be a round rug since its a round table? Where are some of your favorite places to shop for contemporary art (framed or just prints)? What do you think about different curtains same color family but with bold stripes or prints? Your rite the scones dont fit in with, I have some nicer ones on the way already! =D I know art is a neccessity in this space i struggle just to pick out one piece, think im too hard on my self arggh! What do you think about replacing the wine rack with a buffet or gorgeous bombay chest? Oooh and I am definitely going to create a little book nook space on one of those naked walls and display my art above that area, no worries I know now not to hang things so high now that I know the rule exist, lol, thank you houzz. Oh and lamps are on their way I went with a sea glass color with a rich shade and I decided to step out of my comfort and get larger than I would choose lamps to tie into the teal throw pillows. Please keep the ideas flowing, I love my houzz family!

olldcan I'd replace the chandelier above the table, get something with some glitz. I'd paint the wall that the wine racks against in a dark tone same colour as your drapes for a more dramatic effect. Speaking of the drapes, there too short, consider adding a hefty band of colour to them and installing the bar at the ceiling. Is it me or is EVERYTHING on the walls is way too high.

anitajoyce No, You don't have to use a round rug in the dining room. I would use a rectangular one for the space. The rectangular rug, to me helps to square off or define the space.
