Cabinet Color Help
Moved into a new house and need help updating my kitchen to a more contemporary style. The walls are a neutral gray, floor a cream color and the countertops are black with khaki splotches (don't like them and may change one day). The dining room is peacock blue.

Please help with suggestions for cabinet colors, I've included a picture with current color swatches and possible ideas. I'm not very good at this so help is appreciated.

I was thinking a chartreuse color for the top cabinets with charcoal gray for the bottom cabinets and maybe stainless steel tiles for the backsplash.......or do all the cabinets in the charcoal gray and a colorful backsplash. I just don't know how to plan with the current countertop colors

Thanks

decoenthusiaste I think you'll tire of the chartreuse and it will go out of style very quickly. Would use it as an accent in cannisters, dishware, window treatments - easliy replaceable things. Cabinets are too much trouble to have to redo them in a short time. Check rustoleumtransformations.com for a product that may help. Keep it neutral and easy on the eyes in such a small space. I would go brighter - the grey pennant, maybe - because there is nothing worse than working in a dark, poorly lighted kitchen. Also think you should change out the ceiling fixture in both rooms and raise the round mirrors in the living room so they don't look like they're falling behind the sofa - only 8" gap, but some space between. Keep tweaking!

Bond Girl Well, I couldn't live with "Leaping Lizard" starting at me each morning, so maybe I'm not a good person to ask. My gut reaction is that the space is so dark. So I love the idea of the SS backsplash, and would go with as many SS or reflective options as you can. Look at the long modern SS pulls to spread that sparkle around the space. For a color, I would not fight what is already there. I'd go with a color that is either slightly darker or lighter than your floors. It will look great with those counters (even if you don't like them). Also find some kind of under cabinet lighting that works for you.

If you love that Leaping Lizard and Oak Alley combo, consider painting the dining room that combination. Then get some accessories in that yellow/green or peacock blue in the kitchen.

olldcan Are you replacing the door and drawer fronts to a modern style or are you wanting to paint them and replace the hinges and cabinet knobs.

fittiger I agree with painting the cabinets chartreuse, I was just trying to make the kitchen feel more alive and I thought it would go well with the peacock blue dining room.

I will be replacing the cabinet doors, drawers, hardware and pulls , just not sure if ill get to it before painting (I'm sick of the forest green color.

So, cabinet color? The room gets a lot of natural light, two windows over the sink, three windows across the room (picture; that furniture will be replaced) and three windows in adjoining dining room, so I wasn't too concerned about painting cabinets dark gray but if that's not a good idea, please let me know. Other suggestions for backsplash? Thought about back painted glass as well.

As suggested, the light fixtures will be changed and updated, the mirrors was a pic when I was testing them out, they have been properly hung.

I really just can't decide what to paint the cabinets and what backsplash to use.

Thanks again.

fittiger The current wall color is Behr Anonymous and the dining room wall is Glidden Peacock Blue.

fittiger The Oak Alley in the first picture is an approximate paint swatch for the current cabinet color, as well is the grey pennant for the current wall color which is really Anonymous.

fittiger I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask this, but any suggestions on where to buy cabinet doors and what style would look good?

victorianbungalowranch Wow, you are not afraid of color. I like your choices but agree something more neutal with accessories might be bette in the kitchen. Add some art in the dining room and adjust the living room a bit and it really pops.

I do think one mirror rather than two over the couch would look better, You have two of everything--yellow pillows, tables, lamps and mirrors and knickknacks. Definately need to be raised, but not too high. Another pillow or two, maybe in a print would be nice.

fittiger How about a lighter grey with a hint of taupe? Glossy finish? Glazed finish?

fittiger Something similar to these cabinets?

fittiger These were the photos from Houzz that originally gave me the inspiration for the chartreuse

victorianbungalowranch Yes, it can be great, especially if you love the color and have lots of light.

Stoneshop I would stick with your darker cabinet color (Dark Secret) for both your upper and lower cabinets. You could use either your stainless tile idea for a backsplash, or a creamy white with stainless behind the stove (sort of like your inspiration photos). To incorporate your Leaping Lizards, why not try painting that color on the ceiling? You could also bring in some chartreuse accessories.
