Lib McC Since your primary colors are dark browns, I'd suggest something in to make the room "pop". How about a amber, burnt orange or rustic red? Pillow with those colors in a bold geometric print would work well. The curtains on the one window need to have color or go lighter than the dark brown. Get them long enough that you can hang the rod from the top of your wall. It will give you visual height and make the room look larger. They cost a little extra but well worth it.
John Dwyer Architect Well, first, I would switch the blinds to sheers. Roll-ups would be best. That will allow a lot more light into the space. It's lacking in natural light, particularly with the dark furnishings and wood floor. Then, I'd do floor to ceiling curtainst that could pocket nicely on the sides of the windows. Something to give the room a little more vertical scale. Consider a white on white drapery or something with a pattern. Pollock has some great stuff. I'd also lose the corner lamp and find some other light fixtures with more pop. Try CB2, Room and Board, or even Ikea for something easy. That would be a good start.
camillealbert Those rugs would really look good. Light colored curtains and larger lamps. Also some bright throw pillows and a pretty throw on the back of one of the sofas. Just a matter of choosing your favorite color and go with it. Flowers on the table and some green plants in pots that are not brown, would cozy up the room too. Good luck and have fun decorating.
jensie You need more color and, as mentioned above, a rug to anchor it all. For accents - I like either burnt orange or a soft aqua blue to warm it up. You should go light and breezy with the curtains (I think the blinds are fine) and definitely raise them up. I would probably do matching ones for all the windows. I've attached a few pictures for you to give you ideas. You can't go wrong with shopping at Ikea, Target, Tuesday Morning or Home Goods for rugs and curtains. Let us know how it turns out!
lorethor You have a neutral room so you can pick any accent colour and run with it. I would recommend raising your drapery rod and choosing a lighter colour for your drapes; something closer to your wall colour.
anitajoyce Your window treatment is too dark. The furniture is dark. I would get drapery in a tan, or tan mixed with red, rust or Lt blue color (in a stripe or another print) to give contrast to the space. You also need accent pillows in another color that you like that matches the drapery. A nice rug with beige, orange, tan, red , Lt blue or rust would be nice also. Your pictures blend in with the wall. Change them to an abstract or big flower picture in a nice color. A table runner to the dining table would be nice also.
lionnessone How about a geometric pop?
Your drapes need to pop, your room is dark, brighten it up. You might want to consider a geometric design in lighter shades of blues, browns, creams, or off whites.
Your room seems to be small so when you invest in a rug; make sure it is large enough to fit the dining and living space.
Add flowers, accent pillows, and larger lamps; remove those photos to another room and replace them with fine art work.
Your room will bloom with love, Lionnessone.
Karla For accessories pieces of relational content (globe map, travel photographs, compasses, suitcases, airplane or boat figurines, etc.) And for treatments what about this?
Weaver Home Photography Love the ideas for pops of color using throw pillows, rugs and window treatments. You might also open up the room, and therefore lighten it up a bit, by moving the couch away from the wall. Perhaps switch the position of the couch with the two chairs. Angle the chairs, under the large map, with a small table in between, for a focal point. A sofa table, or low book case, behind the couch would be another spot to place a lamp or two and/or some cool accessories. Might also give you a little more storage space (yay!). intelletas Dq, how about lose the blinds, add sheers behind the dark curtain, put one sheer on each of the narrow windows with them scalloped opposite ways have tie Back bars on the big window so you can let light in during the day. Add a tan accent rug under coffee table , lose the corner light add gooseneck light.
karenb683 The curtain rods should be moved higher. Makes the room look bigger if you hang them above the window. Take a look at the picture of white curtains that jensie has posted for you. treat all windows with the same covering and use the same height on each.
jagarrou I agree with the "all that brown!" comments ... it is very dark and flattens out the mood of the room. I would actually keep the wooden blinds and add a light curtain. I also agree about raising the rod height.
I like the British colonial feel of that combination, and I would add a rug with warm colors and some pillows with warm colors. I would put a lacquered tray on the ottoman in a lighter color pulled out of the rug color. I would also scale up the size of the lamp by the sofa.
jagarrou to go with my post above, I like a pineapple lamp with a British colonial and maybe the red tray out of the four above would look best with the rug and pillows. I'm kind of nutty so I like the idea of the stripes in the rug and ghe stripes in the pillows.
jagarrou OK this is what happens when I spend the morning on Houzz instead of cleaning my house. ... I will add that spending the extra money and getting a really nice throw to drape over the sofa arm nearest the wall/window can add warmth and color. I would also add a light, neutral table runner to the dining room table. And now I'll stop obsessing over your house! Maybe.
jagarrou Ok, it's impossible. I'm still thinking about your room, so here goes...if you're attached to that large map on the wall, I would re-frame it in a wider, more expensive frame with a neutral mat. Don't be afraid to layer curtains over the edges of it. You need more layering in this room because right now it's just a flat beige space with some flat brown on top.
Paul & Shari I love the ideas of an area rug to warm up the space....and I also love the idea of sheers rather than blinds. I'm a motel manager and I love having sheers which can be easily washed on a regular basis if needed. I would then layer draperies in colors you love....for a cool look, the aqua with browns and white or tan to echo the colour of the walls would be sleek...otherwise, warm colours will give it a whole other sexy look. I'd do a couple panels of a solid, then a couple more of a print to add vertical, visual interest! that room is lovely, but definitely needs POP!
ArtworkNow.com You've obviously just put some remodeling time into the room so I don't think you want to do to much more. A personalized art print featuring you and your spouse or family is a great conversation starter and the colors can be modified to match your interior. I went ahead and suggested some window treatments here in this image. Silk curtains and a cream rug from Pottery Barn and maybe try placing the chairs elsewhere to open that area up.
