Kitchen layout HELP!
We are in the process of building a house and I am having a terrible time designing my kitchen. I cannot decide how to arrange the appliances. Option #1: gas cooktop with an over the range microwave and a double oven in the wall. OR a double oven range with microwave builtin in the wall. I really want the ventahood and a backsplash, but also want the maximum amount of storage, Also do not know which one is nicer. Thank you!!

Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders Based upon our experience and removing badly scorched and melted microwaves from above gas surfaces, we would say NEVER put a microwave/hood above a gas appliance. There is too much heat build up and it blocks access to back burners. When one leans over to get to back burners, it can be a safety hazard.

I am sure others will have different advice, but we see this time and again.

If you go with a gas range, we recommend a highly efficient range hood that will really pull the heat build-up away (more so than steam or cooking odors, which are also an issue, but heat is more of an issue). We would use at least a 600 cfm unit even though some say you could get by with less. The actual cfm would be calculated based upon what you ultimately chose to do for your appliance.
