Need help with the size of my dining room table
I have a dining room space that is 10.4" x 11.4" and it is a pathway from our kitchen to entry foyer (we have alternate way to entry as well, but this is fastest to entry). I have small oval table and it is too small to fit 6 to 8 people with the leaf added. I found a gorgeous rectangular table that is 48" x 84" (with one leaf, without it is 62" x 48") and this will be the only furniture in the dining room except chairs and curtains. I measured with tape and have about 36 to 38" from table to wall on the "pathway" side with the one leaf added. And then on the ends it is about 28" of space but one side is open to foyer. Is this enough space? I really like this table and it has another leaf we could use in our next house when we have a bigger dining room up to 106". Please help :-)

Dar Eckert It seems a little tight with the larger table but could you use a built-in bench along one wall and snug the table up to one wall to give the walkway more room? I'm not sure what is on the other wall it might not be a possibility. On thing I have done in my small dining room when I have a crowd is to angle the table diagonally in the room to give more room on the ends of the table.

decoenthusiaste You can piece together a butcher paper shape of the biggest size you'll have the table extended. Lay it on the floor and see how the walk space feels (remember there'll be chairs to deal with too.) Then cut the pattern down to the smallest size the table will usually be. If these are comfortable for you, go for it. Remember; if you want to put a rug under the table buy one two feet bigger than your table on every side for chair scoot and sit allowance. This room may not allow for that at all, but sounds like you don't plan on a rug anyway.

Aggie Purvinska Try a SQUARE or a ROUND table to fit 8. That will solve a lot of flow problems.

hottott75 Thank you all with your responses. I will get butcher paper and see how it feels. I like the bench idea as well. Maybe I should stick to a rectangular table that is 44" wide (what my current table is now) and around 72" to 78" with an option of a leaf. I would LOVE to do a round table but I put the tape down for a 60" table and it is too big for the walk way area, so bummed.

hottott75 Dar - We cleaned out the room so it will now just be my dining table/chairs and then eventually some really nice faux silk curtains. I am trying to keep the table centered underneath the new light fixture so perhaps I need to stick to 44" wide table vs. the 48" table I found.

Dar Eckert You can also swag your light so it hangs above your table even if the table is not centered under the fixture.

decoenthusiaste Would you want to consider a round drop leaf table? That way the leaves would take it out of your way unless you were using it. I once had a friend who had a square table and she hat two half-round additions built to add to it when she needed to seat more people. You may have room for one each side of the window that could be pulled out and attached to a square table. Think that one through!
