Lighting for Two-Story Great Room

hwhitlockNovember 17, 2012
We are building a new home and I am having trouble picking a lighting fixture for our two story great room. The ceilings are 20'8" tall and the room measures 22'8" x 19'0". The ceiling will be coffered and is divided into 9 sections. I would like one large chandelier to hang from the center coffered section. The area inside of the coffer is approximately 7x7 ft.

I have picked out the following fixture but am now questionning if it will be large enough for the room. The measurements of the fixture are 43" W x 48" H. What are your opinions on the fit of this fixture for the room size? And if you don't think it will fit, do you have any other suggestions that are in this same color family/style?

Thanks in advance for your help!

It sounds to me like it will be plenty big, but I'm not used to working with such vast spaces. Let's hear from some other designers.

Here are some examples of lights in two-story rooms. They look to be similar in size to yours.

If you approximate it to 23' x 19', add it up, you get 52. Make that in inches. So you are looking for a chandelier with an approximate diameter of 52 inches. That's the math I've read somewhere to be used. I'm in a similar dilemma and looking for a big shconbek.
