French provincial bureau
This was my childhood bedroom bureau, growing up. I didn't take a before picture, unfortunately - but the first picture is the closest I could find to what it looked like prior to refinishing. I love how it turned out!

sstarkes I'm in love with this!!! I have this dresser, too! What colors did you use...such a refreshing change from just painting it white, which is what every magazine seems to say do.

Monica travels I had the bedside table and high chest of drawers--have always wondered how to update them someday. How did you prep the wood?

Kelley Nancy I took this bureau to a professional to refinish because I didn't really have the know-how to do it myself. I think after seeing exactly how he went about it, I am ready to do the next one myself. Here's what he did: first, he cleaned it thoroughly, sanded it, cleaned it again and then made a few repairs on the inside of the drawers. He primed it and then painted it with Benjamin Moore silver metallic paint in a glossy finish. We experimented with several paint shades before getting the color and sheen I wanted - he would do a sample drawer front and bring it to me until we got it just right. He cleaned the drawer handles and left those for me to do. They were pretty dark so I finished them with light touches of a combination of an oil-based silver metallic sharpie marker and Martha Stewart's silver metallic paint, using a very thin paint brush. Another note: he used a sprayer to paint this bureau, so there would be no brush marks. Hope this helps you!

michigammemom Such a pretty way to display your silver pieces.

Kelley Nancy PS: I thought I posted this in "before and after" my mistake! Also, I'll call the guy and ask him the exact shade of Benjamin Moore paint that he used for this bureau, and post it for you. Right now, I'm scouring the web for a beautiful silvery framed mirror to complement it

Bonnie Nice work on the handles!

Monica travels Such a perfect finish would pretty much require a sprayer! Really lovely. A completely different effect would be achieved using a paintbrush, probably more rustic.

Margaret Phillips My Mother has several pieces that are extremely similar. Bought in 1963 at Sears my parents built a new bedroom for my two oldest sisters (five children) since they were expecting me in early 1964. The various pieces are in my Mother's basement. I may have to ask nicely and get there before one one of my DIY sisters gets there first!

santafesusie Love it! Need to find a narrow dresser or buffet and will probably change the finish too...Inspiration!

Kelley Nancy tffaulhaber: your bureau is stunning, with a lot more detailing on the edging than mine. I love your navy blue wall paint too. Coincidentally, I just bought a gallon of Ben Moore "New York State of Mind" navy blue paint to do an accent wall in my family room. Is that the color of your blue paint?

2bluvd I have this same piece of furniture at home. I was so tempted to sell it when I moved, but now I'm glad that I didn't. A good friend of mine sent me this picture and I am too outdone. You did a FANTABULOUS JOB! Do you mind sharing what you did to make the outcome so wonderful?

glow1060 This is beautiful and I love the color. I did something similar with mine a few years ago. I cleaned it, used a very good primer and used a good Shermin Williams sponge roller. The tops of these old dressers are similar to lamanent so a good primer works well.

2bluvd Thanks...did you use the same color paint? And so you used a sponge roller and not a brush or spray? The reason that I ask because my dresser looks like it's made of wood but it could be laminate. It just like I might need to use some type of sealant before I paint. I'm going to print a copy of this picture and take it to the store with me. Thanks again!

lisalovesquilts Dare I say that it looks like it has grown up? It was a beautiful little girl's piece and now it's a lovely big girl's piece! I think the handles look so elegant, just a perfect way to show off your silver. Well done.

glow1060 2bluvd - I wish I used this color. When I did mine, everything was "white". Sponge roller was great... no brush marks and very smooth. A good primer is a must and you cannot skip the primer. You can even get a tint in your primer to make it easier.

Monica travels I just had a thought that this would also look great in black, with the same handles. So very chic and elegant. Definitely a grown-up version of our dresser!

Pamela Danner Beautiful you truly made a silk purse out of a sows ear! BTW I had the exact same Sears dresser in my bedroom as a little girl I don't know about you but I loved it and my canopy bed when I got it at about 8 and hated it by the time I turned 14!
