I just had a half wall around my patio torn out. The reason? When you're sitting you're looking at a wall. I guess the half wall is OK if you need privacy or for safety, but before you do this place cardboard, blankets or anything that will block your view around your present balcony and then sit down. Do you like what you see?

A trellis with vines would be a beautiful addition and would eventually cover the view. It can grow from pots on the porch or from below if that's possible.

Consider enclosing it with glass to make another room. Drapes would provide privacy when needed. Might also serve as a great spot for plants. Looks like these home owners tried it.
