Help! Paint color in kitchen
December 4, 2012 in Design Dilemma
Help! We just bought our first home and we have a lot of cosmetic work to do.
The kitchen currently has green counter tops which we will eventually replace but need to live with and match a color to (anything better than the dark red they currently have). The floors and cabinets have a honey tone to them.. I was thinking a beige color on the wall but that seems to be washing everything out.
We'll replace appliance with stainless steel. The trim on the windows and door will be white, and we are putting white wainscoting below the chair rail that is currently wallpaper.
Any advice on paint color??

Hi Jessritz,
If you go to the photos and put in green countertop there are several pictures. Attached below is one example. It looks like the walls are actually painted a much lighter shade of green . I thought of your kitchen because the cabinets on my computer appear to also have a honey tone to them.

I'm sure you will get many other suggestions.

I think save your money and skip the wainscoting. Paint the chair rail to match the rest of the trim - white, I recommend White Dove from Benjamin Moore.

Remove the wallpaper ad paint the wall two colors. Bottom Different from Top.

I think have fun with the unusual green counter tops.

Paint the bottom part:

[houzz=Benjamin Moore Absolute Green Paint]

and the top:

[houzz=Benjamin Moore Maritime Blue]

Get fun Counter Stools:

[houzz=Danish Modern Adjustable Height Bar Stool, Turquoise]

and two fun pendants for over the island

[houzz=Beat Light White Pendant - Stout by Tom Dixon]

Have fun!

Oh boy, well the green counters are definitely an eyesore---but you can make the most of them with some effort. First, I suggest you paint your cabinets and all your trim white or off-white. Currently your floors, trim, and cabinets are all close in hue so the room really lacks interest---must paint! Second suggestion--- add an interesting and colorful backsplash either tile or a retro wallpaper-trust me it will do wonders as it will make the counters look intentional and have a purpose. Third---remove wallpaper on lower wall and paint it a flat or eggshell finish of the same color as the trim/cabs---paint upper wall a color from either the tile or wallpaper of the backsplash. Attaching a couple pics for inspiration---do add some fun pendant lights over the island. Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!
