Need help with flooring decisions
December 9, 2012
A few years ago I put down golden/reddish oak laminate in my living room and dining room. I didn't realize it was a discontinued product, so my fallback has been to use carpet when I re-do the floor upstairs. Now I have a kitty that is tinkling on the carpet, so I don't want to use carpet. What is my best option: similar laminate from the stairs upward (possibly with painted stair treads), completely different wood, a runner on the stairs (but I really don't want to use carpet) or some other option?

Many thanks,

And the plan has been to get rid of this tile in the master bath. But maybe I wouldn't need to with this wood. Wouldn't be my first choice if I was buying new, but it's in good shape and my neighbor was just telling me about a non-toxic way to clean grout.

we had this problem in a rental house. we added new laminate floors on main level and 2 years later wanted to add it to second level. found out floor was discontinued. we decided not to try to match main level, we went darker on second floor and for the stairs from main level to second level we recarpeted.

on two different levels, i don't think it's too much of a problem to have different flooring.
