Clever illusions and other tricks of the eye
PLATEMARK DESIGNDecember 21, 2012
When we first toured the rooms for this project, inspiration for this boy's room came almost immediately. And it doesn't always happen that way!

As designers, we are often faced with - as we like to say - creative obstacles. Things we'd like to change, such as an awkward recessed wall, are often at first not-too-obvious. Building out the wall would have consumed precious space for the headboard and bed. The room is small as it is.

So, make it a feature! We designed an upholstered shelving unit that also serves as a beautifully tailored headboard. That way, you would never know the wall cavity was there and the muted, textural fabric (from Rogers & Goffigon) evens out the tones of the room and brightens it all up.

Also, by extending the window treatments wall to wall in a similar fabric by Romo, it gives the illusion that the modest, if not humdrum window is much larger than it is.

Cool huh? I would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

Wow. What a difference. Really love the shelves behind the bed. What a cool twist on the traditional headboard.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. Tackling the creative obstacles makes it so much fun for us. Growing up I'd have loved a bedroom like this!
