go for light colors - beige or off white will do the job well
add some paintings or aretfacts to enhance the look

houssaon A grey would make your cabinets an asset; just add pewter look hardware. Look at: Revere Pewter, Benjamin Moore, vintage pewter CSP-110 or barnwood CSP-115.

Interiors International, Inc. The grey family of color will work well. I would go much darker on cabinets.
