Need help designing shelves around fireplace
We want to put base cabinets with bookshelves above not sure if we should have the cabinets on the left go all the way to the wall or keep them the same length as the space on the right. The cabinets and the shelves will be white and the floor is wood and simple mantle with just paint above and then natural brickish stone tile beneath the mantle. Any suggestions would help.

Luminosus Designs LLC I noticed that the spaces do not seem to be even between the left and right side of the fireplace? I feel that if the bookcases go all the way up the ceiling, it will accentuate this further. I am wondering if it would be better to stop the bookcases short and use the open spaces above for display. With the right accent lighting and accessories, it will be very beautiful.

Cynthia Taylor-Luce I think that if the shelves fill the space, the asymmetry won't be disturbing. When you are arranging items on the shelves, make sure you stand back and "weight" the display so you achieve a balance from side to side.

I would also recommend that you make these thick shelves (or have a thick edge at the front to appear to be a thick shelf).

LM Designers Go all the way to the left wall. This will be beautiful and a grand statement when done.

Interiors International, Inc. I agree with Cynthia. You could also if still concerned about the asymmetry. Have cabinets built ob the left side. Make these balance of the right side. Put matching door panels on the wall to the right. That is a lot to do but some people really need things balanced. I personally like asymmetry it is the artist in me.

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design It will look perfectly fine to have the bookshelves go all the way across on both sides. I think it would draw more attention to the difference in size if they didn't go all the way across. It would cause a "Why?" reaction.
