Authentic Reindeer Antlers in Contemporary Condo (no hunting!)
Reindeers shed their antlers regularly. When hiking in Sweden a few years ago in some thick fog, I found this rare large pair together (you can often find small individual antlers, but these large ones, especially in a pair, are rare). I sewed cardboard together with a plastic clothesline and a nail to make a large box and carried it through Stockholm and through the airport (got some real strange looks-the boxes had bread labels on it). Long story short I got them in the US no problem!!! For my new comtemporary condo, I'd like to hang them above the fireplace. I'm not a hunter and don't want them mounted on a reindeer head. My questions for you all:
1. How should I finish them (paint, stain, taxodermy, etc?) I've had them for two years now. They have some gray spots that haven't changed since I first got them
2. How should I mount them?
3. Have you seen any places that have contemporary looking reindeer antlers hanging? My designer said this is "in" right now.

Nest Design Inc. Love them! What a great find. I like the natural color and would not paint them. I would mount them on a large wooden trophy style mount and go with wood stain a shade darker then your floors. Good luck! Melissa

designideas4me VERY COOL. I had no idea they shed antlers. Maybe you have a new career ahead of you. You can market them online. Is that a rare find? If you said you shot the animal then I would be pissed but its very cool that you found it . How often do they do this ?

designideas4me Dont paint. Much more natural as is. I see lots of pitues and ideas on this site if you type in reindeer antlers. Those may have belonged to Roudolf

Cat Rowe These would look gorgeous above your fireplace. I would leave them natural. And figure out a way to add clear glass votives to them and use as candle sconces. Good luck Peter!

decoenthusiaste Paint the space above the mantel a dark color so the antlers will stand out as in the photo above.
