How high is the ceiling in the bedroom? Will it be over the bed or will people be walking under it? How often will you be using the light? How bright do you need it to be?

Generally speaking, I would recommend a semi-flushmount fixture, which hugs the ceiling but still has a nice side profile. Here's a simple fixture about 20" in diameter which might suit you. It only takes up 3" of vertical space and it will take three 100 watt light bulbs.

I agree with the general type that Cynthia mentions.
