Need help for family room, please excuse the tree and huge mess!
Please excuse the giant post Christmas clean up disaster in our family room. I knew I probably wouldn't have another chance to post on here for a while. I am looking for any ideas to make this space warm and cohesive. We have a coffee table too that matches the end tables. We plan to put hard wood floors in in a couple years because of kids we are keeping the drab carpet a little longer. There is white trim and light brown paint, brown furniture and a black mirror. I don't know where to begin and how to make it all come together. We plan to keep the couches a while longer as well but want to buy all new art work, frames accents or lamps to improve the room now. Any ideas would be very welcome. Sorry again for the awful photo on such a classy site. Thank you!

mmilos Get a bigger vertical mirror for over the fireplace.
Tall floor to ceiling custom drapery panels would soften the windows.

Julie Thome Draperies, Inc. Do not apologize for your room. There has been way worse posted here!!!!
I think your choice to find art is a good place to start. There must be a color that you like apart from brown. You need a decent scaled piece of art above the mantle, the mirror there is a little too small. Mix up the furniture in terms of color a little, using an accent color that you choose, possibly from the art you hang. Double height drapery panels that are stationary would go a long way to cozying up the space.
The entertainment unit seems to dominate the room and the furniture is shying away from it next to the wall. I would be moving sofa's and chairs out into the room and perhaps have them facing the fireplace rather than straight at the TV? Scale down the entertainment unit somehow and keep it in proportion to the other furniture items in the room.

An area rug of a decent size should also be one of your first purchases.

Good luck.
