Reupholstering these chairs
I picked these chairs up a an antique sale and love the size and shape, but they need to be reupholstered. The dilemma is leather or fabric, nailhead trim or not.

decoenthusiaste Fabric, pattern, color, texture but no nailheads.

olldbobbi Where will you use them? If in the dining room I'd say leather for easier maintenance. In any other room go for fabric, and either way my vote is no nailhead trim.

Shayna McElveny Hi franmarch,
First off the chairs are a gorgeous find, I am a bit jealous, they are in perfect condition and are very humbling. Secondly, here are two great inspiring houzz ideabooks that can get you started in your antique reupholster project:

Ideabook: Go "Green" using antiques...
and
Ideabook: Quick Fix: Reupholster a Chair Seat

Good luck! Definitely looking forward to seeing the before and after of these chairs!

lefty47 HI - WOW ,great find ! I can see them with a distessed leather in a dark brown or prefered black with some small braid or small nailhead trim. Then just accent them with a loose ethnic fabric lunbar pillow that has some rich colors.

Jayme Hobbs Is that nailhead on the sofa? I love those chairs, I like the nail heads and would use those with fabric or leather, leaning towards a leather.

Dar Eckert Looks like you have 2 leather pieces in your room already, you probably want to go with fabric if you plan on putting them in the same room. However, if I had to have leather, I would go with navy blue or the red from the rug.

franmarch Thank you for your input, they will be used as seen , I have two leather sofa with nailhead trim in the room. I was thinking texture since there is lot of pattern in the rug, coffee table, pillows etc?

Shayna McElveny What kind of texture? I feel like it would have to be a solid color since the rug adds a lot of life to the room.

franmarch I was thinking a burlap type of texture?

Shayna McElveny Oooo I like that idea, would you do a lighter color or dark? The room is a pretty neutral brown, I think you could either go to a dark brown or simple light beige. What were you thinking?

Shayna McElveny You can get some inspiration by typing in "burlap textured chair" in the search bar under products.

franmarch I found a fabric with a dark teal and beige. I like it but hubby's not sure

decoenthusiaste I like the teal fabric. You could also go with the colors in that orange lamp.

Jayme Hobbs wonder if just a tad more brown in that fabric would be awesome? The blue is great & maybe it does have more brown than I can see from the pic.

patriciarhall franmarch, that teal fabric looks so good with your rug, lamp and sofas

Manon Floreat I like the texture of the fabric you chose. I'd like to see the teal a little deeper though. As deep as the darkest teal in your area rug.

Shayna McElveny I love the fact that you went bold and chose some fun colors! Go for the teal, us women gotta stick to our creative instinct. Go for it! I would love to see the before and after like I said earlier. This is such an exciting project!

Shayna McElveny Love Manon's idea!

anitajoyce Fabric for sure, since you have the nice big leather sofa. This will add another nice texture to the space. Love the chairs and the nice rug. I think the chair fabric could use a bolder print ( maybe a color or colors from the nice rug). Could you post a picture of the whole room? Thanks.

Aja Mazin Perhaps, a cream and blue hemp

franmarch The whole room! Coffee table is cleared off since grand kids are here!!

anitajoyce I love the color of the orange lampshade. Fabric with this orange color will add a nice pop of color to the space. Fabric with rust, orange, or teal blue like in the dog on the mantle would be great colors for the chair fabric also. The room has a lot of neutral colors in it .

franmarch I like those!!

Ramona Fabric with the smallest nailheads as in the original. Leather would be too much leather in the room. Get extra fabric for pillows for the sofas to tie it all in.

Jayme Hobbs idk...those r cool chairs!!!
Tammy Sprinkle You could use a lighter leather to match the sofa or an accent fabric to pull out some colors from the room but I would stick with the nailheads. They compliment the chairs and since your sofa has them, it would look nice.

Tres McKinney Design Leather would look great but since you already have a pair of leather sofas and your coffee table looks more formal then I recommend a linen velvet. It has the texture you are looking for but lends a little more formality and old world eclectic look that would make the chairs sit well with the coffee table.

thegriers Fabric for sure. I think a neutral ivory background with a small design with the other colors in the room or a matching solid color from your rug. I love nail heads so I vote for. Really like your room.

lefty47 HI -- I just had another thought about your chairs somewhat like what I said before . Because you already have lots of leather ,- think about getting an ethnic rug that has the colors you are going for and have the seats covered in that and still finished with the small nailhead details. You would only need a small area rug to cover both chairs and it would look high end and last forever and would not show any stains and troubles grandkids can bring. I think it would look great with the style of your room. Kind of Ralph Lauren , if you know what I mean .

franmarch I love the idea of an ethnic rug! I will start shopping tomarrow

Manon Floreat Excellent idea, Lefty! I can totally see kilim seat covers on those chairs in this room.

Norma Sassone You have a really lovely room. I think those two FABULOUS chairs need a print to bring together the blue and brown in the room. The cool thing about covering chair seats, is you can change your mind as often as you like!
