Help me stop eating on my sofa!
Hi folks

I dont have room for a dining room table in my place (manhattan studio), but theres a nook near my couch that I think I can put some kind of table to eat at.

I hate sitting on my sofa and eating at the coffe table. It sucks. Doesn't feel good.

I'm thinking some kind of bar table, similar to what they have at the window at starbucks and some bar stools.

The wall is about 60" wide, and theres about 30" between the couch and the wall.

Any opinions on what I can buy, or what kind of table top I can build and DIY?

fawndang I understand you hate eating at your sofa. I have a small space as well. I found this to be a really good solution: http://www.amazon.com/Turner-Lift-Top-Coffee-Table/dp/B005VAIP4M. Otherwise, a floating shelf at bar height might be your best bet.

orangecamera Would you be interested in a table that goes over your lap while you sit on the sofa? Like this one?
http://www.accurato.us/harvard-computer-table-soho-concept.aspx

Or do you really want a separate table and chair? I think with that small space, you'd wind up looking at the corner while you eat. That's probably not the best solution, in my opinion.

fawndang For above, the amazon link didn't work? Try searching: Turner lift top coffee table.

Interiors International, Inc. You need an end table and that doesn't leave you any room for a bar table. I did have a very contemporary glass lift top coffee table. It worked well for me and I could pull 2 chairs up to it for diner parties.

designideas4me I have 2 tables..one in the kitchen and one big one next to my sectional in the living room but I LOVE to eat on the couch and choose to eat on my coffee table. Oh i see .. if you are looking for a table that pulls up to the couch there are many? Is that what you are looking for?

kathleen MK This may be too expensive of a change but I'd replace the sectional sofa which crowds the space. A small love seat would give you space for a small table and a couple chairs. Tilt top tea table or drop leaf table couldsave more space when not used for eating.

onthefence This company has 2 NY locations. http://www.calligarisshopmanhattan.com/cat/2/Calligaris-Dining-Tables

It's pricey - but that Eleven Cocktail and Dining Table is gorgeous! Seems like something you'd have and use for a good long time. I like the Mascotte table too.

joeykeys Hi guys,

I appreciate everyones help!

I'm really not into the idea of one of those coffee tables. Anyone have anything else? Some kind of breakfast bar with stools is ideal. The photos make everything seem a little more cramped than it is..

joeykeys @fawndang would a floating shelf hold the weight of someone leaning on it with their elbows, etc?

Any specific ones you like the look of? The idea is attractive to me.

June Noel Where did you buy your lamp from? thanks!

designideas4me Are you saying you want a narrow tall counter near the window? or maybe the kind of coffee table that lifts up... sold at bo concept.................you can eat on it at its full height.
jimbeauindy Find plant stands that will hold the plate at the correct height when sitting on the couch. Then you can have a "table" to eat at, and when you are thru, you can place them in the room with a artificial plant or arrangement on it. Spices the place up as well as being functional.

trasgorshek Fawndang's idea about a floating shelf might be your best bet. Looking at your space you are limited with what will fit in but a floating shelf would be great with two counter height stools. You could put a couple of cafe style pics above and give it it's own vibe.

Susan Flowers Here is a table http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Tokyo-Drop-Leaf-Rectangle-Dining-Table/7123645/product.html; I agree floating shelf might be best and can easily be made with hollow core door

Custom Home Planning Center slip under tables are a good choice

onthefence Joey, this may seem an odd way to go about this - but I'd grab the bathroom scale and lean on it with one elbow. Determine how many lbs of pressure you're exerting. Multiply that by the # of elbows you think might rest on the floating shelf at one time. Then add maybe 25% or so. If you have 4 elbows each exerting 20 lbs of pressure, a floating shelf with a weight limit of 100 lbs should be sturdy enough.

Then again, I'm not an engineer ;-) The above test seemed logical to me though.

Susan Flowers Lastly, google flip top cafe table....you will find tables or just bases to add your own top, where top will flip sideways when not in use...add "bar height"... Can do square or round

hihosilva My single daughter has a bar height bistro glass top table in her small livingroom. She uses it as much, or more, as her sofa. She eats there, though she has a kitchen table. She has an office bc she works mainly from home, but she sits at the bistro in LR w her laptop most of the time. Can't tell if u have anymore space in the other corner of your LR, if not u may have to make some hard choices about sacrificing some of that couch space for a pretty bistro. They are very attractive and useful if you're open to it. The glass top also dosen't appear to crowd the room as much and she has a pretty green plant there too. You might even consider a pretty hanging light that u can plug into the wall and hang over your table from some ceiling hooks. I am certainly no expert, but if I lived in a studio, I would try to work it in. I hope this has helped. It gets uncomfortable sitting only on a couch all the time and its terrible for your posture. Good luck!!!

Natalie Hi---wow that is tight... I recommend a round coffee table-the current table takes up too much room. A narrow table for the wall-CB2 has something simple but I think it could be dressed up with a good set of chairs or ottomans and nice place settings. The best part is that it is on wheels so it can be easily rolled out to accomodate a guest and/or serve as a bar/food station when hosting a gathering. Comes in White, Carbon, and Orange...
Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

joeykeys I think Im leaning most in the floating shelf direction.

Or something like this http://www.overstock.com/Worldstock-Fair-Trade/Reclaimed-Teak-and-Metal-Console-and-Tufted-Metal-Stools-Set-India/5980929/product.html

Scott's Creative Home Adding a long ledge shelf willow face users to the wall. Consider having the long ledge shelf made with a gentle bump out curve in the center. This will allow for you and a guest to sit across from one another at a slight angle. Any laminate counter fabricator can create this. Currently there are many cool to funky laminates on the market that will allow you to make this counter a piece of contemporary furniture .

joeykeys Saw this through a restaurnt window. Thought its a good way to explain what Im looking for:
generalslady I am wondering if you move the lamp to the 30x60 inch wall and push the couch in that direction, would that leave the other side for a bistro table and 2 small metal chairs at the window side? Maybe even put a ledge on top of the windowsill and slide a chair up to that for sitting? The third idea is a desk. You can put your laptop on it and use it as a eating table.

onthefence I think the suggestion of a console type table against the wall is a good one. It would probably be a lot more sturdy than a floating shelf.

Here is an article that lists a few different styles and price points of console tables.

Natalie joeykeys, is there a possibility of having you upload a few more photos of your room? Perhaps we can offer other alternative(s). I thought about pushing the sectional against that far wall too as onthefence mentioned---but cannot really see well on that side and it looks like a pillow or something is between the blind and window? What is opposite sectional-where is TV situated-entry doors, etc...
I do like the table from OS you posted... More pics please-maybe? :)

calikym I saw a table that actually came out of its normal position (as a coffee table) and then lifted upward and toward you to use as a dining table with a big lift and lock mechanism. It was at a regular furniture store out here in SoCal. Then it would go back to becoming a regular coffee table.
calikym Here are some examples but there are so many types.
calikym Search on coffee table with lift up top. But here's another cool one. Hope this helps. You can easy use it as a computer desk.
designideas4me If you get a lift top table go with bo concept. Its modern like your couch. If you want a table that fits flush to the wall like your coffee shop window go with ikea. They make one that is for small tight spaces and lays flat to the fall when not in use.

Susan Flowers The problem with a console table would be the legs, which might be more obstructive and limit chair movement from the area in a small space...that being said, if I got a table, I'd add casters, so you could use it more as a buffet when friends are over, or pull it out if you wanted to watch TV while eating...facing the wall all the time may serve for meals, but if you want to spend a longer time, you may want to slide the table out.
calikym Susan, the casters idea is a good one, especially in a tight squeeze where 1 room is multipurpose.

joeykeys I have been putting this off but this is pretty much exactly what i want to do:

Anyone have any idea where i can get wood like that? [NYC]

Custom Home Planning Center Any funiture shop with a joiner can laminate 2 x to achieve the look. The design prototype of a wall hung desk should be available later this month. it is a larger size as this wall hung bedside table but 18" wide and 38" long with two drawers and a charging plate for batteries.

blindsdirectcanada That blind is big heavy for the space I would recommend replacing it with a Screen roller shade or Cellular shade.

joeykeys OH! I see the confusion

That isnt a blind at all. Its a "wall". Basically a room divider built in. Looks great but crappy in the picture.

aniluap2 Ikea sells butcher block counter tops that can be cut to size, not quite sure this is what you want...they also have stainless steel ones. You could always go to home depot and look at their veneer plywood such as maple and if you give them the dimensions they will cut to size. Also, they can advise you on the correct brackets to install underneath for support. It will be cheap and you can stain it to your desired color.
joeykeys aniluap2: thanks for that idea. any idea if ikea cuts on site? Im in NYC so dont have the backyard to cut the wood my self.
aniluap2 No but hone depot also has butcher block counter tops and they will cut on site. My daughter lives in Manhattan and I have passed a home depot I think just before going into the Lincoln tunnel on the NJ side but you could google it?
nancybrooks1950 Does it have to be long and skinny? Think about the Norbo drop leaf wall mounted table from IKEA http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80091713/.................................this/
- Now visualize the top of a grand piano (probably can't fit that large a shelf, but you get the idea) the way it is propped up when in use. It would seat more, or at least seat you somewhat face to face with a little room for extra food. If you don't want to spend the money for furniture grade wood, you could paint it a high gloss accent color or even paint a design on it to make it look like wall art. YOu would probably need more than one brace to support it. Stools could sit on either side.
