Shabby Chic update!
Hello all! I'm updating my very small living room - from Arts & Crafts to shabby chic. I've painted the walls a celery green (fiancee's request, it has to stay) and my other main colors are white/off white, light pink, and hot pink (like rose colors) - with pewter mixed in.
I just finished painting my armoire and fireplace white (see the before pic, where the armoire is unpainted). I'm wrestling with what color the rug should be. I have seen on craigslist locally a braided rug the same color as my walls. Or should I go with a white color rug? Suggestions? Also, any suggestions on how to complete the shabby chic look would be great!

Matteo Dezigns You've done a great job so far! Ok..if you really want a update to chabby chic...your room is perfect for the final accent color. Look for a Black/White rug! With the walls celery and your furniture white, bring in the element of black in the rug, sofa pillows and small items for your mantle. You can also make any pictures have black frames (black n white photos would be awesome!) all in all the green, black and white trio will give you a very chic look!!!

tjs4 My only concern with bringing in black is the fact that the room itself is very dark. I've got dark hardwood floors (original to house) and dark original trim. I have privacy film on the windows since my neighbors' houses are so closeby. Do you think that the black would darken the room up?

Matteo Dezigns No, not at all. Remember i dont want you to get a black rug and black pillows...just a dash of it. Look for a mostly white rug that has some black running through it, same for a few accent pillows. Also look for celery green/black pillows. The picture frames are minimal. Remember, keep the black as an 'accent', and it will not add any darkness to the room.

Heres some ideas for rugs. I don't think I would go with more green as it would be overpowering. It seems that pale oriental rugs, neutral sisal or rag rugs may be a better bet.

judyg Darzy, you are always so right on. Your vision is remarkable. Do you do design for a "living"? If you don't, you should.

misspeggy7 I totally love the black and white rug idea. It will give it sophistication, but also it will look young. Braided rugs look dated, in my opinion. You have done really will. I love your old rug. Is it natural fiber?

tjs4 Nope, the rug I've got is a rag type rug of woven rags - ivory, dark brown, and tan colored with a .chocolate brown boarder

tjs4 What about this type of rug? I prefer to buy from craigslist due to the better price point ;)

gillianlf I would look for a hooked wool rug with roses if you really want to embrace shabby chic.

Darzy Your first craigslist rug is better I think.

anthip I like the black and white Craiglist rug. That would look nice with some accents of the other colours you like. Some photos below of black with green and bright pinks. Not shabby chic but with your furniture they could be.

Some kind of monochrome plate display above your fireplace would be awesome - to link the black and white theme in.

cyn222 Great job so far! How about a nice floral rug with a light pattern...not too busy.

tjs4 What about a mix of photos in black & white distressed frames above the fireplace? As of right now, I've got a bunch of frames painted in the fuschia accent color (kinda hard to tell from the pic). Should I just eliminate those frames and go with the black/white combo?
