What to do with big empty space in stairway
As you can see from the pics, there's a lot of empty space. I have thought about some big pieces of art on the currently blank walls. I've also considered converting that dome light into a lower power recessed light and hanging a largeish fixture over the stairs. Thoughts?

AMN I like how they treated the tall skinny wall in their staircase. Something like that might be nice for the wall you face when you descend.

This colorful display brings welcome brightness and interest to the stairs.

I think the three framed things you have up now don't provide enough impact. I think something bigger and bolder needs to be on that right wall (looking down).

Your lighting idea would offer some needed interest also, but it will change what you do on the walls.

niroti I would suggest wainscotting down the stairs with medium to small sized pictures down the sides of the wall. Make sure the frames are uniform in color. Hope this helps.

gillianlf A chandelier or larger pendant fixture centered over landing would brighten things and create a destination. I would also recommend a collage effect with smaller pictures in uniform frames for the large wall.

R K Starting to think that a mirror would look good on the skinny wall.

When you guys say "large wall", do you mean the one with the main railing or the opposite wall?

Wallmark Homes A mirror would help make it feel more open and if you hung a light fixture that would help brighten it

R K OK, I think I'm definitely going to do a tall mirror on the skinny wall (just have to find one) and a light fixture. Looking at this light fixture as my #1 choice: http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1157454&categoryId=cat1701013

This mirror works proportionally and style-wise, but I'm worried it's not big enough: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10121252/
