Need help with wall and trim paint color
Zizi Friesen
January 14, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Please help me by suggesting how I should go about painting this home we just purchased.
It's an older home (1987), and I hope to make it look a bit updated by using the right wall and trim color.
Just so you know, I'm leaning towards white on white with black interior doors. We won't be able to upgrade the flooring to hardwood right away, so new carpeting will be placed but the floor tile has to stay for another year or 2.
Since the house needs a face lift, the kitchen cabinets and den built ins are also on my radar. I would nike to achieve a good visual flow, so maybe these colors should be repeated throughout?
My husband is fond of dark, almost black, kitchen cabinets, with hardware matching the stainless steel appliances.
our style is a mix of modern and ethnic (we currently live in Asia and are about to return to the US)

So, to recap: I'd like your opinion for colors on:
wall, trim, staircase railing
interior doors
kitchen cabinets, built ins
carpet, future hardwood floors

I will be attaching photos of the new house as well as some of my furniture, hopefully that can help you to helping me :)
Thanks you in advance for your interest!

I wonder about a color like this olive green? It works well with a similar wood color that is seen in your home's trim.

I think black would look fabulous for the interior doors and trim, while keeping the walls a light color. The staircase black would make a dramatic statement also. There appears to be a lot of natural light in the rooms to allow for this! Those choices would fit the furniture and decor you currently have. I love the stone fireplace as it is but the mantel should be replaced along with the fan. Light area rugs under the furniture after you replace the carpeting with dark wood floors would look super sleek!! Good luck...

@househaunted - Thank you for your input.
I love green, but I could not commit to an entire house in this color.
As I explained, I'd like to have, maybe, the same color all over.
So my question is, should it be white walls + white trim + black doors or white walls + original trim and doors, or pale Grey walls + white trim... and so forth.
Also, I don't think olive green goes well with my furniture style. What do you think?

@ All 4 Show - Wow, thanks for the idea! I have not thought of the entire staircase in black! You're right, there is a lot of natural light there. So, black for the trim both agains the floor and the ceiling or just the bottom one (sorry I don't know what to call it... baseboard?) and in what finish? Semi gloss or glossy?

I think a high gloss finish would look best! Good luck....
