Got rid of my dining room - what next!?
January 16, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I just sold my dining room table and buffet - because we never used it. It just was a place for me to store piles of junk that drove my husband crazy! So now I have an empty room that I'm not sure what to do with. While some organization would be good- I don't need a mudroom or a craft room or anything like that. It is not a large room- see picture. I'm considering some built ins and bench around the window. Because I think that would be nice to have if someone turned it back into a dining room. Going to replace the light fixture - but then what. We'd like it to be usable and not just going from one unused room to another. Any ideas? Spacing chairs in there will be awkward since it's so small. Planning on keeping the color. Anyone have any great ideas??

Take a look at how some fellow houzzers repurposed a seldom used dining room. http://www.houzz.com/discussions/304395/A-new-library---

To make it useable, you really need a use in mind. You have to think of at least 1 frequent activity that you want to do in this room, and then set up the room to accommodate that. Ideas:

* Reading
* Conversation - large groups
* Conversation - small groups
* Napping
* Talking on phone
* Computer
* TV
* Snacking
* Writing
* Eating meals
* Reviewing your collections
* Exercising
* Playing with your pet
* Needlework
* Painting
* Necking

This would be a lovely sized reading room and library. Put some built ins along one wall for books and some of the stuff you used to put in here, 2 comfy chairs and maybe a wall hung fireplace and a nice rug. That way when you sell it can still be used as a dining room.
