Hardwood floor color choice
We're in the process of renovating a 22 year old cape. Looking to choose a good color for the wood floor that will be bought prefinished. The wood floor will be going in the living room into the eat in kitchen area and down a hallway. The kitchen cabinets are cherry. We do not care for oak but need something that is hard as we have a dog who loves to chase balls in the house and the floors will take a beating from her nails. The kitchen floor and the main entryway are the same vinyl sheet good pattern as shown in the attached photo. Any ideas on a complimentary color would be appreciated.

AMN What is it about oak do you not like? If you don't mind the grain, you can just stain it or finish it in a different way that suits your color needs. I see so many colors when I search it on Houzz. http://www.houzz.com/oak-floor

nh4me It's the grain in the oak that I don't care for that much. Maple might be a good choice.

feeny Maple would be a good choice, as would quarter sawn white oak (which is cut in a way that minimizes the grain pattern and also makes it more durable). While pre-finished floors are great, for kitchen applications it is sometimes better to have the floor finished on site because then the layers of polyurethane go into the cracks between the floorboards as well, offering better protection against spills. This isn't an issue in other rooms, but it helps make wood floors in kitchens more durable. Anyway, it's just something to think about. Love your cherry cabinets!

nh4me I like the idea of quarter sawn oak as it does not show the grain so much. The wood floors are going in the livingroom and hallway, not the kitchen. The cherry cabinets were a great find online and made in the USA!
