Need Recommendation For An Ottoman
I am looking to replace my current coffee table with a large square or rectangle ottoman. I was thinking one with color and a pattern would look nice, but I cant decide what would look best. I have attached a picture of my living room and a swatch of the fabric of my sectional. The rug is cream/beige colored and the design is gray but actually looks brown. I love orange so if I could do some kind of pattern with orange then that would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

Aggie Purvinska I think a larger rug would be great and one that could have more color, and the ottoman can maybe pick up a color from it...a brown leather one is practical and may be easier to come by...

Kyle Cowherd Thanks for the suggestion. I like the rug, but I am trying to avoid using red. I found a nice wall clock that is a distressed teal and looks old and a little rusted. I am also going to be making some decorative pillows and was going to find fabric that has teal, orange and maybe some other colors. What do you think?
Aggie Purvinska Yes, that sounds lovely! I still think you need a larger rug.
Kyle Cowherd How big of a rug should I get and where should I put it?
Aggie Purvinska Beautiful! I think I like the first one and fourth best! Big enough to have the sofa on it, I am guessing 7*11 or something like that, the biggest they have!

GARY FINLEY, ASID Kyle
keep in mind the size of your rug.....an ottoman will be a nice addition but you will lose the benefit of the visual pattern of the rug
4 months ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID great start but I would suggestion finding a different spot for the rug, using a larger rug with the new ottoman, either punch up the room with a wild rug or keep the rug two toned or shaggy and add the 'artful' play of lots of color with the fabric on the ottoman....I like the idea of a patterned crazy fun rug

decoenthusiaste You can shop by color at homedecorators.com. Get a friend who can detect the color to help you look. Is the end of your sectional already useable as an ottoman? You could just have it upholstered.
Kyle Cowherd Thanks Gary. The rug I currently have is 5x8. What do you think about this rug in 8x11? http://image1.rugs-direct.com/rug_gallery/00069/10686/103192/162639/rd880a-5.jpg

Where do you suggest I put the rug?
Kyle Cowherd Deco, the ottoman looking area at the end of the section is attached and part of the sectional.
GARY FINLEY, ASID try to have a rug that is longer than the sectional by a foot on either side +/- and maybe wide enought to walk on between the screen and the sofa
4 months ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID lol ............................love the rug
4 months ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID you got the idea
Kyle Cowherd Thanks Gary, I really like that rug. The biggest it comes in is 8x11, you think that will be big enough?
GARY FINLEY, ASID what is the lenght of the sectional......
Kyle Cowherd I believe it is about 113" +/-
4 months ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID The you are right in the range
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd Ok Gary, now that I have the rug figured out, what should I do about an ottoman? I have a black wood coffee table right now, but I dont know if it will go with that rug.
GARY FINLEY, ASID lets see it
Kyle Cowherd You can see it in the pic of my living room above. I was using it to hold me tv for a couple of days. Here are some other pictures. I had to brighten them so you could see it.
GARY FINLEY, ASID the coffee table, as it is built leaves little area for a rug to be see unless it is large, so thus another reason for the larger rug. the coffee table is fine for either location

rhewins Hey Kyle - you might want to check this out - I took out your rug (and kettle ball) - added an ottoman and round rug. Plus added some wall art too. I did this in Crate&Barrel's online 3D Room Designer.
Kyle Cowherd Thanks Gary, so it will be fine with the 8x11 rug, great!
Kyle Cowherd Thanks rhewins, thats pretty cool.
rhewins No problem Kyle - if you want to see what Crate&Barrel has available, just go to their site - look for their 3d room designer under the inspiration menu - and start designing. good luck with you project.

GARY FINLEY, ASID HOUZZ skills limited here, so I cant show you a larger rug....but you can visualize the difference

Judit This rug requires a glass-metal coffee table! Also white is too much problem to clean, take it from a lady :) What if you hang it on the wall as an artcraft plus get some shaggy rug and a leather ottoman? Does this sound crazy to you?
Kyle Cowherd I am going to put the rug I have now under my kitchen table. Any ideas for what color of shaggy rug?
GARY FINLEY, ASID I do have! try to find a taupish grayish off white.... if you dont find what you like go to a carpet store or look up a carpet installer, call them to ask if they have any shaggy/long pile carpeting. they could....could have a piece left over from another job or have yardage in stock. once the desired carpet is found if can be cut to size and bound wtih a cottom tape to finish the edge....
Kyle Cowherd Taupish grayish off white? Thats really stretching it for a color blind guy, ha ha.
GARY FINLEY, ASID go with wool white with some natural darker streeks you'lll do fine
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd you would do that instead of this rug? http://image1.rugs-direct.com/rug_gallery/00069/10686/103192/162639/rd880a-5.jpg

I am going to get some colorful abstract paintings for above the fireplace and above the sectional
4 months ago · ·
michigammemom Hi Kyle I like either of these rugs from West Elm. Both would look great on your dark floors. The coffee table is also from West Elm.
GARY FINLEY, ASID thought you wanted shaggy now
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd I prefer the fun rug, but I am open to shaggy. Whatever will look best.
GARY FINLEY, ASID Kyle Cowherd

I am going to put the rug I have now under my kitchen table. Any ideas for what color of shaggy rug?
GARY FINLEY, ASID just saying......thought that was ur direction it's all good check out art and rugs both before purchasing
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd How about this painting with this rug for above the fireplace?
GARY FINLEY, ASID NO
GARY FINLEY, ASID interesting but not so matched,
one should be recessive and the other more aggressive
4 months ago · ·
michigammemom Kyle if you have your heart set on the wildly patterned rug, your art should be more subdued...black and white photography for example. If on the other hand, you love the art, the rug should be a solid or a pattern that reads as a solid. The two together fight each other and compete for attention. A wise investment might be a more versatile rug...a simple, solid texture that coordinates with your sofa. Then you can really get creative with art and accessories.
Kyle Cowherd Ok, then I will take Gary's advice and find a shag rug that is wool white with natural darker streaks. Sorry for changing my mind so much, this is my first experience with real decorating.
judyg How about a plain sisal style rug, with the color to compliment that great fabric in your sofa. You could do real sisal or the wool and jute blend from Pottery Barn. A round metal coffee table like this one (easily found on line) and put a less pinkie color on the walls. Then, as michi suggests use your colors on the wall/throw pillows. Less of a commitment.
michigammemom Here's a great example: the tone on tone gray rug has a subtle pattern that reads as one solid color while the art and throw pillows add color, drama and contrast.
GARY FINLEY, ASID right ....the last art and rug compete for attention, much like michigammemom and myself are doing.......
GARY FINLEY, ASID good work Mich
Kyle Cowherd thanks Gary and thanks michigammemom, I am starting to understand a bit.
GARY FINLEY, ASID don't rush it.....go to some galleries and find somethings you like.....art is personal and as for myself I have all the art I've ever purchased. Set out and think of 'collecting' grab a date and go to an art show. if there is an 'artsy' area in your town look up a few and ask when they are having their next show.....(usually free food and drinks lol) Invest a little time. You seem to have good taste, you only need it cultivated a bit

Kyle Cowherd what about this rug? would it go with my section?

hwilliamson I reckon your current rug is too pale on your timber floor so you should go for a darker rug eg a sisal one like something from crucial trading. Then just make your sofa look fabulous with some striking cushions in your preferred orange which will compliment your sofa and floor well. As your sofa appears to be a lovely traditional fabric perhaps you could consider using a bit of texture for your cushions eg velvet.

Kyle Cowherd The pottery barn rug is out of stock, but I found this one which I am hoping you guys will tell me is perfect:

GARY FINLEY, ASID good man ....can you spring ofr the largest one?
Kyle Cowherd Yeah, I was thinking the 8 x 10
4 months ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID so you wil hopefully have 3-5 inches beyond the lenght of your sectional....sounds good
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd Yeah, I should have some. Thanks for the help Gary.
GARY FINLEY, ASID looking forward to seeing it once you get it on the floor
4 months ago ·
Judit hi again the latest rug is just perfect! I told you I told you... :P
4 months ago ·
Judit Look at this! Your new wool rug with a leather ottoman will be inviting and elegant together.
Kyle Cowherd Thanks Judit, my rug will be here on Monday so I cant wait to see what it looks like. Im going to keep my current black coffee table for now (I wasnt expecting to spend $800 on a new rug lol). I will make my decorative pillows soon and then will find some art to put on the walls. But first things first, I need to mount the tv on the wall and get the home theater set up!
GARY FINLEY, ASID Kyle are you actually making the pillows yourself?
Kyle Cowherd Well technically my mom is making them for me, but we are covering some plain pillows we bought with fabric we are picking out.
GARY FINLEY, ASID lol just askin
fyi as you sectional is leather, fabrics that are smooth often have a difficult time standing up, they slide down to the seat cushion....if you have a 'cotton' 'flat woven' fabric, you might want to use a cording between the front and back panels to give a bit of traction
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd my sectional is microfiber and has some texture to it.
GARY FINLEY, ASID ahh.. good deal, thought it was leather.....proceed! lol
4 months ago ·
Judit black coffee table is just as good
Kyle Cowherd Got it. Still need to adjust it some and let it flatten out some.
GARY FINLEY, ASID Wow. What a change. Good going. Are you pleaaed
4 months ago ·
Judit very nice and inviting! the picture on the wall looks lonely though
4 months ago ·
Kyle Cowherd Yeah I love it.

Judit, that picture is temporary. I will be adding other stuff to the wall.
GARY FINLEY, ASID Kyle
onsider, only one piece of art above the sofa, but make it a very large piece....say 48' x 60" wide
4 months ago · ·
Kyle Cowherd Ok, thanks Gary
Kyle Cowherd Well I love the look of the rug, but I can't take the rug shedding anymore. Can anyone suggest an 8 x 11 or bigger area rug that won't make me vacuum every other day?
GARY FINLEY, ASID Kyle, hang tight......most any new rug will looooooooooooooose a great deal of yarn or fuss for some time as it is first in used......
Kyle Cowherd Is 2 months normal?
GARY FINLEY, ASID 6 months is normal
Kyle Cowherd Is there any way to speed it up? Or stop it? Haha
8 weeks ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID not to stop it ............is it sheep skin?
Kyle Cowherd I'm not sure what kind, just know that it's 100% wool
8 weeks ago ·
GARY FINLEY, ASID then it's should be sheep ........................try taking the hose of the vacuum without the roller/brush and pull as much as possible off that way
8 weeks ago ·
Kyle Cowherd Ok, I will give that a try tomorrow.
Kyle Cowherd I finally got something on the wall. On another note, I have tried every vacuuming trick in the book and the rug still sheds like crazy, worse than my German shepherd.
