Area rug may help. Some throw pillows.

A brighter color on the walls would help so much.

Nice wall color. Just pop in some brighter colors in artwork and pillows. I'm not a fan of a throw rug over a rug. Put a bowl of colorful fruit or flowers on the coffee table.

I've always lived by-think resale. Only add color to things that you are able to change with seasons. IE pillows, curtains, rugs, nick nacks.
