Kitchen Backsplash - Suggestions?

klh84January 20, 2013
Trying to choose the right backsplash and would appreciate any ideas. I thought maybe a cream subway tile but my husband likes natural stone. There are some huge areas near the stove where an old microwave was removed - not sure if I should do shelves or leave open. Appliances are being replaced with stainless steel. Thanks!

It looks like you have a randomized stone "wall" or fireplace (?) right outside your counter there. Maybe something that "blends" echos that? I think, given the style of your cabinets, that a natural stone would be better than subway tile. I saw this tooling about on the web. Slate in a flagstone pattern on netting. Should work as well on a wall if not too thick. What grout you choose, would change the look.

I thought it wasn't possible to like oak cupboards, but these are very nice.
When it comes to decision making about the kitchen, who will spend the most time there, you or your husband? That person should have the most imput to the space. There is also a philosophy that, "A happy wife is a happy life." It is possible to compromise - such as a subway tile in cream stone. Light colours will brighten up the working areas.
Ultimately, you should decide.

Here is an example with similar tones as your cabinets.

I appreciate all the suggestions, photos and comments - thanks very much! I like the idea of maybe a stone similar in color to the Charmin we used for the fireplace but maybe in a subway style layout. Welcome any thoughts on whether that space right of the range needs anything done other than backsplash ...

This isn't a subway pattern, but it is a stone tile in a tone that I think would look attractive with your cabinetry and fireplace stone:

Very nice, momof5x. Personally, I like the last pic - Campbel. The colours warm my heart. The backsplash combines the counters, appliances and cupboards in a natural palette. Is there enough cream coloured stone to "compromise, save this marriage, and create a great kitchen?"
