No idea what to do with this!
New house moving into - need to fix this mantle/fireplace.

Shelley Gartside Hmmm...it looks like wood to the left of the fireplace? If it is, and there are wood floors too, you might want just take it down and lighten the whole space up. It would be better if we could see more of your room, but the brick seems to overpower the small firebox. (Also spray paint the brass black.). You might want to post more pictures to get better feedback.

tclouti2 I just posted another picture. It is a house I am moving into - student living. The wood beside are just cabinets which will be taken down.

Aja Mazin WHAT A GREAT SPACE!

The mantel is beautiful and will be difficult to decorate with that size TV.

rawketgrl What about this do you want to fix? LOL...
Looks like you have 3 competing wood tones. With the brick and stone it is a lot going on. Not to mention the black and gold firebox. I am not sure what style you like or have but here is what I would do.
1. Keep the wood floor.
2. Paint the wood panel walls white or another color but it must match the color you paint the wood fireplace mantle/surround.
3. De-brassify! Paint the gold and black firebox. Here is a post on how to do this: http://bit.ly/UJGOng
4. Paint that gorgeous wood fireplace mantle/surround white. I usually would not paint wood but this color just does not go with the room. But I LOVE it so I would paint it.
5. If you like the stone/brick then do nothing you are done.
IF you don't love the brick/stone you can drywall in the parts outside the mantle. Texture and paint. Or you can tile over it... Pick some marble or granite tiles you love, I would go for a grayish white color, but anything that you love will work. Tile around the firebox to cover the brick between your gorgeous mantle/surround and the firebox. Here is a link on how to: http://bit.ly/1HXqYn

Post some pics after you get done and let us know what you decided on! :D

Aja Mazin In addition to painting the brass black, you might consider painting the brick WITHIN the mantel black.

It seems as thought the fire box is too small for the mantel.

tclouti2 What colour should I paint the wall then

tclouti2 What about more of a simple mantel like this with the TV mounted above

Aja Mazin A smaller sleeker mantel would be great in that space and you could then mount the TV above.

Further, it would solve the problem of competing with the great wood floor and the brick.

For the wall color, pick one of the lighter gray colours in the brick to blend with the subtle gray undertone of the wood floor
