I'd really spend a couple hundred dollars and have a professional decorator/designer come out and help you with this. It is much easier to help accessorize in one afternoon and a couple hundred dollars, than to go back and forth online. Some photos below to inspire you with your transitional style - but it this your style? Or is it something else, and, for what its worth - find your inspiration point - a piece of fabric in a toss cushion, a gorgeous serving tray, or bowl, or a gorgeous piece of artwork...

Nothing sais "cookie cutter" or "spec home" as much as wall to wall beige carpeting and carpeted stairs.

Extending the wood floor through out and incorporating a runner for your stairs would do wonders for this space.

Also, rethinking the bench behind the sofa, perhaps considering a sofa table. If you really like the bench, you could always leave the bench under the sofa table.

here are some inspiration images:

I don't see much in the way of accent color except the beautiful blue glass object. Your artwork and furnishings are very neutral. I would pick a color and spice things up. I also think a larger, lower hanging, interesting light over the table wood look good. In the kitchen i would add a little lamp on the kitchen counter and a colorful valance. Replace your accessories with more colorful ones.

Beautiful!

It is elegant, spacious, and uncluttered.
I love the palms.
