Furniture Placement and Remodel
Cool home but needs some work. I was looking for some inspiration for this main living room area. It's really long and kind of narrow. There is a wood burning stove in the left corner of pic2. With stairs going up on the right side. Two large window doors go out to a deck/beautiful view.
On the opposite side (1st pic) is a small nook on the left and a doorway to the next room. Also the first pick shows another stairway which goes down to the basement.

eoakes ideas?

gillianlf What do you want to do in this space?

Interiors International, Inc. It is hard to see the floor plans. I am going by the pics. It looks to me that you could treat this as two different sitting areas. One for conversation and one for TV viewing. A grouping of club chairs by the wood stove would be nice. A sofa facing out toward the view. Have a rectangular coffee table with a chair at each end. A couple of end tables and an area rug will round it out nicely.

eoakes Great idea. That's actually pretty similar to what I was thinking.

eoakes Also, if you hover your mouse over the floor plans it will show a larger version. I have all three levels of the house included. This room is on the main level and is labeled as the living room. However on the right side of the home there is a room labeled "bonus room" which is slightly bigger and doesn't really seem to have a purpose.

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design Interiors International and I are on the same page with wanting to separate the family room into two areas. I could even see a screen between the two sets of windows, providing a division of spaces. The alcove by the bathroom would make a nice office space. Even with a screen dividing the areas, rugs will help you create separate areas.

I would love to see updated stairway railings.

eoakes Thanks! Yes, those stairway railings will be the first thing to go! I was actually thinking that splitting the space into two separate rooms would make the most sense, -- maybe with two rugs holding together the two spaces. I'm a little worried about it looking like a hotel lobby though haha.

eoakes I also plan on painting the trim white, and a new color for the walls.

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design You could paint not only the trim white, but the walls as well, except for select accent walls where you would feature a color.

I would favor an architectural screen (as in first photo above) instead of a wall to separate the two areas if you decide they need more than just furniture arrangements and rugs. That will show off the lovely large space while still dividing it into workable areas.

eoakes what do you all think of the house's floorplans? can they be fixed?
Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design Very strange plans, with enormous utility room and laundry, huge powder room, and oddly shaped closets.

eoakes Yeah. We are thinking about opening up the ultility room and taking part of the laundry room to make a huge family room area. This is the basement so it would be good for tv watching.
