Fireplace Design
We are building a new home and I need help with the design of my fireplace. It's in the far corner of the room from the foyer entrance and is a fairly open room. Size of room is 20' x 20' but open to the breakfast nook, kitchen bar area, a lg sliding door (8'x6'), french pocket doors (8'x5'4") into the office, and open to the foyer and dining room. I'm trying to decide whether or not to put stone to the ceiling (10') and the entire length of the corner wall. The wall is 7'4" across the corner. I'm afraid it might be too much for the room. The stone is stacked and tending towards dark in color. I only want a mantle shelf, no legs. Will the shelf get lost in the stone? I have considered stone only to the mantle and then drywall above. If I do this, should I extend the stone on the sides of the firebox to the corners of the wall or end the stone in line with the mantle and put drywall out to the corners. The width of each wall on sides of the firebox to the corner of the wall is 25" (firebox is 38"). I desperately need help as I am not good at decorating, much less designing!

Brenda Fisher Take it all the way up and add a reclaimed beam from architectural salvage for the mantle. Gorgeous transitional look which gives flexibility to your design later.
