Master bedroom....too feminine?
Handsome hubby and myself have just put the finishing touches on our master suite. We made our own padded headboard and bed frame, painted our 27 year old furniture a dark charcoal and changed out the hardware and used silver as an accent on rod, lamps and picture frames. When I finished painting out a formerly wood finished dresser with white and charcoal paint and applied a decal, my hubby commented "it isn't getting too girlie in here is it"? This got me wondering......it this room too feminine? What additional accessories are needed to make it more gender neutral if it is?

fairviewbonnie How about a black framed picture on the wall with something he would like in the picture? The headboard looks lovely. I love your colors. Would like to see a vibrant complimentary color somewhere in the room. Perhaps a 5 x 7 rug under the foot board of your bed would be good. You have done a nice job!

tammylottero I like the idea of dark framed pictures. I really like the things you have done. The only thing that you may think about are the pillows on the bed. seems like you should bring the color of you floor up on the bed and maybe some thing more fun, like the little white dresser, it is wonderful! Take a look at he pillows on Pottery Barn. Maybe something larger on the largest dresser to add color and help vary the size of the things there.

Dytecture The overall theme of the room is fine, just a bit more straight lines with the headboard and perhaps introduce another color as well.

Rachel What a lovely and restful room. I think if (and I can't for sure tell if there is,) there is a "girlie" feel it might be a combination of a couple things:

1. the white dresser with the gorgeous queen anne legs. Very delicate.
2. The colour of the walls...is it a pastel?
3. The headboard. While its not overly feminine, it definitely is not something a bachelor would own.

The dark dresser/side tables scream masculine to me. I agree that you need a pop of a non-neutral colour somewhere. Maybe change the baby blue blanket for navy. Replace the round mirror with a rectangular frame with a chunky dark frame and only slightly less wide than the dresser (I think it'll match the dark chunky dressers better) and get some art or some book shelves for the walls.

Your side table lamps are super curvy (lovely set) but they kind of look like they belong more in a living room than a bedroom. Maybe wall mounted lamps that are more modern or "square."

cswbsw I think the room looks great. A nice mix of masculine and feminine. How about changing the fan & light kit. Dark fan blades that compliment your painted furniture with a light kit in silver or chrome. Something just a little bit sleek and modern. To me your current fan and light look better suited for a shabby chic decor.

Alix Flamm I would add some painted panels behind each lamp.check out Pier 1's website. Everything looks good in the bedroom. It just needs some Artwork.

demccrae Thanks very much everyone for the feedback. I am searching for artwork and love the dark frame suggestions. Am also looking for new light shades for the ceiling fan as I know these are too "precious". Considering that this reno cost us under
$750 for EVERYTHING that you see(by repurposing what we had and doing all of the work ourselves) I figure I have a little bit of money leftover for embellishments :). Thanks again!
