amartell Is the sink on the wall across from the stove or is it in an L shape? If it is across, perhaps add an island in the middle with the sink in it. Since the cabinets are a nice wood, you could sand, and stain a nice color. Also, replacing the knobs always makes a huge difference in the appearance.
Danielle B The most important thing to worry about is whether the layout suits your needs and lifestyle. From the pictures, it seems inefficient. In the end, you know better than anyone it it works for you. If it doesn't, it is well worth the money to get your plans done by a professional, such as a designer or kitchen specialist. I assure you, you will not regret it! Look at their portefolio, to see if their tastes match yours.
Personally, I would redo it and take advantage of the reno to get a larger window over the sink, and to retrofit the microwave oven in the lower cabinets (much safer that over the range).
lchartrand59 I am so impressed with your quick response and feedback is much appreciated. I am trying to upload more pictures but do no know how. can you help.
Rachel I can't tell what the layout is from the photos so I won't comment on that. Your cabinetry looks to be in good shape but its hard to tell if needs to be sanded down and restained. Lots of work so don't do it if you don't have to!
Otherwise, to update the look, new light fixtures, knobs, flooring, window treatment, and counters (spring for granite if its within budget). Consider filling in the hole in the middle and placing the door knobs on the bottom corner for the uppers and top corner for the lowers.
What might make a huge difference is re-doing your kitchen table. Check out these ideas! I don't think these colours will work for you, but think about the concepts!
Also, you might want to re-do the railing with a more modern looking bookcase.
lchartrand59 thanks Rachel for the great ideas. I am adding more pictures. My cabinets need some refinishing. How do I hide the hole in the middle of the cabinets. I removed the knobs to get a feel of look it would give me.
