Need help with kitchen reno
January 31, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Should I change the plan of the kitchen. Cupboards are pure maple wood inside and outside. Any ideas would help.

Is the sink on the wall across from the stove or is it in an L shape? If it is across, perhaps add an island in the middle with the sink in it. Since the cabinets are a nice wood, you could sand, and stain a nice color. Also, replacing the knobs always makes a huge difference in the appearance.

The most important thing to worry about is whether the layout suits your needs and lifestyle. From the pictures, it seems inefficient. In the end, you know better than anyone it it works for you. If it doesn't, it is well worth the money to get your plans done by a professional, such as a designer or kitchen specialist. I assure you, you will not regret it! Look at their portefolio, to see if their tastes match yours.
Personally, I would redo it and take advantage of the reno to get a larger window over the sink, and to retrofit the microwave oven in the lower cabinets (much safer that over the range).

Oh my, how do you manage with the sink across the room? You poor thing :-( Yea, a remodel is definitely in order.

I can't tell what the layout is from the photos so I won't comment on that. Your cabinetry looks to be in good shape but its hard to tell if needs to be sanded down and restained. Lots of work so don't do it if you don't have to!

Otherwise, to update the look, new light fixtures, knobs, flooring, window treatment, and counters (spring for granite if its within budget). Consider filling in the hole in the middle and placing the door knobs on the bottom corner for the uppers and top corner for the lowers.

What might make a huge difference is re-doing your kitchen table. Check out these ideas! I don't think these colours will work for you, but think about the concepts!

Also, you might want to re-do the railing with a more modern looking bookcase.

thanks Rachel for the great ideas. I am adding more pictures. My cabinets need some refinishing. How do I hide the hole in the middle of the cabinets. I removed the knobs to get a feel of look it would give me.

Hi - I live in Ottawa and used Frank Cantusci (Stittsville) to refinish my oak cabinet doors in my bathrooms - I had the cabinet doors restained almost black from golden oak, then got Home Depot to match the colour and painted out the cabinet frames (perfectly matched). Cantusci also re-stained a friend's kitchen cabinets - again from golden oak to a darker brown colour - excellent job. Another good cabinet person - if you want cabinet doors sprayed (but he may re-stain, as well) is David Throop, Ottawa Cabinet. He is pricey but always does a great job; I've used him a couple of times and have friends who use him routinely. He's located right downtown in Ottawa. I also painted out my kitchen cabinets myself - from golden oak to cream. I used Benjamin Moore "Advance" paint - it's self-levelling and the project turned out really well (took me all winter to do it!). I wanted single knobs intead of door pulls, so simply filled one hole in each cabinet door - you just have to sand carefully so that you don't see the bump where you filled the hole. I am guessing that you would have to do a really good job if your cabinet pulls were in the centre of your doors. Good luck!

I have the same problem with the centre pulls. I think I'm going for replacing the cabinet doors. One place in the Ottawa area that has always done good work is Laurysen Kitchens in Stittsville. He did my son's place.

Lovely kitchen.
The cabinets are beautiful as is; I would paint the walls a contrasting color- oxblood red, olive green or deep navy. You'd have to paint the cabs to hide the holes, so keep the hardware and focus on the flooring and countertop.

I had knobs in the middle of my cabinet doors also. I decided to paint rather than re-stain my cabinets so I used a wood filler and sanded before I primed and painted. Turned out looking good and the holes are not noticeable except maybe to myself because I know they are there.
