Suggestions Needed! How to 'fill' wall openings?
Hi All,
We just purchased a new home and one of the biggest eye-sores to me is these wall cut outs with the railing pieces. My husband is a contractor, so first things first; those railings are being removed... But then what?

There is two of these openings (as seen in the picture), then first wall is between the entry and the dining/kitchen and the far one is between the entry and front room. I like the openness it creates, so I don't know that I want to just try to patch the drywall and completely fill them in. It is a load bearing wall, so my initial thought of just making the whole thing a half wall will not work.

I'm looking for some finish suggestions to partially fill these or make them look finished?

(The home currently has lots of oak, it is an acreage and has a very ‘older country’ feel. My style is pretty eclectic; I will maintain lots of the oak but combine it with fresh colors and modern finishes.)

Thank you in advance.

onthefence Oh man, what an opportunity! The first thought that came to mind was a product called 3Form. They're acrylic resin panels that can have patterns implanted in them. Here are a couple photos from Houzz. I don't know the price point - but I've always loved this stuff.

bester I would put in columns on both walls to add some architectural interest and update the space. Good luck !

Dytecture I your room could afford to loose a couple inches, then built-in units would be ideal.

JDawnV Thank you all! I never thought of creating some kind of built in unit, the entry could afford to lose a couple inches. And the 3Form product was the idea I was initially thinking as well. Thanks again!

onthefence There's a very recent before and after post where someone has done the built-ins similar to what Dytecture has shown. Given my options, that would be my choice even more than the 3form I suggested. I LOVE built ins. Here's the post (and they link to their blog giving the how-to).

Jayme Hobbs I like the bookcase idea...I also think incorporating a nicely done "post" would look great!
