Teenage Girls Room! HELP!
We've just bought a new house and are finding it difficult to decorate my daughters room. The house was built in the seventies and has lots of dark wood therefore the house is very dark. We are looking for ways to lighten her room up. Any suggestions?

Barnhart Gallery Aww, congrats on the new house and what a sweet tree house of a room she's going to have with that great expanse of window! It looks as though you're starting with a sea of neutrals, so now is the time to take her shopping for a set of linens with a background color that isn't pink or purple, etc, but a color that she will still love when she's packing for college and coming home to visit. That's the color for the walls. You could also start with art and take your color cues from there. Or be inspired by what you see out the window. Choose your inspiration, and the rest of your decisions will flow. (I have a hunch you may be using that persimmony orange as an accent!)

Dytecture You've done great so far with decorating this bedroom. I agree with some art work and perhaps introducing one more color to the room to make it more 'lively'.

tennisanyone I think the dark wood can really work if you paint the walls a blue gray, something like the poka dot pillow but more gray/blue. Try Benajmin Moore, Kentucky Haze. It is a beautiful color and very easy to live with.

nana25 Start with some bedding she likes then you can select a paint colour from there & just let her tell you want she likes for her walls. Most people make the mistake of choosing pictures or art work that is too small so don't be afraid of going big to fill up wall space, a nice poster could be framed or some inexpensive photo frames from Ikea. Accessories can also come from your colour choices. Happy decorating.

Marijane Hurley_Finlay try Benjamin Moore Key Ivory West for the walls - it's a soft color and will brighten the space, but will work with other colors. Put a funky rug on the floor. Go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx or IKEA and get a comfy chair with a a small table next to it. If she has any artist friends at school, have her ask them to do an oil or watercolor of something she likes in a large canvas for over the bed (don't frame it). Replace those lights. Or, for over the bed, just print out a bunch of 5x7 photos of friends or whatever (black and white would make a statement) and arrange them in whatever frames you like. Going for neutral or soft colors will enable you to use accessories for color and change the look when it gets old.

More Than A Carpenter, LLC In a similar situation with my daughter, we made multiple shelves for her "collectible". Each shelf was different, with multiple sizes and styles. I found them so easy and adaptable that I've used them on a number of occasions.

anitajoyce Paint the room in a fun color for her. Would you consider replacing the dark wood doors with white ones instead ( if in the budget)?

JDM Countertops, Inc. One thing about teenagers is that they love to retreat to their rooms...I don't think you need to take it so seriously. Have a little fun with it, and let her express herself. Paint & bedding is easy to change if she/ you get tired of them, but I definitely agree that some of the dark heavy wood needs to be lightened up. Maybe even with some lighter, more feminine furniture. Find some type of inspiration piece and design around it (a picture, bedding, wall covering, etc.)

groveraxle I think the dark bed and the closet doors work well together. I would not change them. Also the window view is lovely. If there is room, consider a chair in the corner for reading and just looking out at the landscape.

I think the room Dytecture posted above is stunning and a look this room could easily achieve. Perhaps run a piece of fabric up the wall behind the headboard, or use a large graphic wall decal like one of those below.

Paint the walls in a complementary color or neutral; gray would look wonderful with the pinks and reds in her pillows. Hang some funky colorful posters on the wall over the bookshelf, and the room will be FAB!
