Need help thinking of tiling ideas over this outdated brick in my livingroom!
Hailee Doyle
February 2, 2013 in Design Dilemma
The red brick that is flat with the wall is also flat with the hardwood floors. We would like to tile over the brick, but aren't too sure of what tile to use or how to even go about doing all of that. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A parge coat of mortar, basically a smooth coat that evens out the mortar lines and prepares the surface for tile is necessary. Good trowel skills and an accurate level and straight edge are really needed. The attached image show a fireplace that started out much like yours.

I placed a steel rim on the hearth to keep the tile from being torn up from firewood and an angle steel trim on the fire box. Hope this helps!

The bricks on the floor should go. The brick on the wall really isn't too bad looking just needs cleaning. Perhaps just some wide trim aroung the brick and a mantel all in white to match your woodwork.

It depends on your decor, but slate works with most looks and styles

We had a similar issue a while ago and decided to use Italian marble to cover the brick and couldn't be any happier. I notice you have a nice little hardwood area around the fireplace, you could do some sort of a hardwood elevated add-on to go around the marble to add a nice touch as well.

HI -- That red brick should go , same for the hearth which looks poorly done anyway . You could probably get scrap peices of marble or granite to cover both areas. Your rug is awsome ! Because of your rug looks like you are more modern ,so look on Houzz for "modern fireplaces" for ideas. And there are nice modern screens now , like tempored glass , stainless steel ,etc.
